911 SC Odometer Just Quit
Hey Folks
My odometer (normal) and odometer distance reset (000- 999) quit while driving along on the weekend. Speedo is fine, all other clocks/ guages are fine. Any ideas? Fuse, relay, internal to clock itself? Somethinhg (where)? Relay/ unit on the tranny? If so, where the heck is it? Cheers, Steve in Calgary 83 SC Coupe |

Odometer gear. Many good threads on this topic and some really good step by step instructions on how to diy. The easiest thing to do is pull it out and send it to North Hollywood and while its there, have them calibrate it.

Thanks guys. You don't think it's anything at the back end of the car?

Thanks again. Wish I were as close as you! Guess I'll give them a ring, box it up and ship it the few thousand miles to Hollywood from Calgary! Some of the guys with Porsches up this way have dealt with them before with good results.

If the speedo works but the odo does not, it's the broken plastic gear.
Be sure to draw a diagram w/ wire connection locations and colors and/or take pictures of the back before you disconnect them. |

North Holly Speedometer provided me with great customer service when I needed to replace my speedo glass several weeks ago....highly recommended.

Right - good reminder - thanks. I've done that before when replacing the little bulbs in the clocks. Finicky stuff.

As others have said; odometer gear. I did it myself by ordering the gear from http://www.odometergears.com/ (talk about a niche business). Carefully pried the ring off the speedo and disassembled it over a clean white towel noting how the parts went together. Stuck it all back together apart from the glass, took the car down the road to one of those nifty radar speedboards the government like to set up on busy throughfares and used it to calibrate the speedo needle. Buttoned it up completly and its worked fine everysince

mine died the week i got my car. i ordered the gear. could NOT fix it myself. and i consider myself pretty handy with fixing such things. just could not get it in there. sent it to a place on the east coast..maybe called eastern electronics? maybe in pennsylvania. had it fixed in less than 1 week for like $150 with calibration and they touched up my scratches to the metal ring. i think i sent it to a place different than where every one else sends it because the turn around was quicker. call around for turnaround times if it matters to you. i didnt care for driving without a speedo....tickets....
EDIT: i also recall while trying to fix it, i gently touched the needle and badly messed it up. very fragile. personally, i think it was worth the money to have a pro do it properly

Thanks Scott. Agreed. Your story more or less emulates what I've heard from others. My fellow Canuck, Dave, from Kingston, Ontario is a brave man! I spoke with North Hollywood, and have decided to box it up and send it to them. $130 for the gear, cleaning and calibration. BTW, there is also Palo Alto Speedometer outside San Francisco.

Deluxe Speedometer in Denver is VERY good. Less than 24 hour turnaround. $130.

Do it yourself. 3 hours and the price of the gear. Draw a diagram when you pull it apart. Cheers, Mike.
