question about brake pads I received from Pelican

Today I received my brake pads I ordered from Pelican. These are early 70's M style for my 914 project car. In the box are 4 brake pads and 4 metal plates, these plates have the same footprint as the pads and I'm guessing these go between the pad and the pistons? They also have the holes in them to slide over the mounting bars. So are these to block heat transfer, suppress noise, spacers or ???

I'm assuming you're talking about the front brakes. The metal plates you describe are positioners which hold the pistons at the desired angle. Some folks don't use 'em. Not sure what the concensus is. I installed them, but they were not present when I removed the old pads.

Try posting this question (whether or not to use the positioners) on the 914 forum.

Nope that's not them. I should have stated I have converted front and rear to early ( 1970-1974 ) M calipers and 20mm rotors. The plates have the exact outline of the brake pads but thin.

You talkin' 'bout the backing plates? (...Willis)

They are said to reduce squealing and pulsating due to the brake pad vibrating against the piston. I don't see how such a thin piece of metal can do this without being a spring.

My Textars had them bonded to the pads. The ATE (for S calipers) had them separate originally and did not come with new plates. I tore through a hole on one backing plate and so I have 3 on the front axle. I have many other braking problems (warped rotors, corroded pistons, etc.) and will be doing a full rebuild. I only got a sense of what they were like by looking at the brake pads during replacement.

Sorry to digress. I would use the baking plates. Put them between the pad and piston and install normally.
