It's Installed! M&K Prototype complete exhaust.

Well the install is done. As most of you know from a prior post, Ben at M&K, designed and built a complete dual exhaust system for my 1987 Carrera. We used a set of SSI's which were cut down to allow installation of a set of 300 cell CA CARB Approved Cats. The cats bolt directly to the new Generation 5 dual in, one out muffler. Before I installed this custom setup I had the stock heat exchangers with a FABSPEED cat bypass (for sale $200) and a generation 4 M&K single in, single out muffler. I loved the modified stock system which had great sound but as many of you know, money was burning a hole in my pocket. I commissioned Ben (M&K exhaust) to built me a custom setup. Ben was great to work with and very enthusiastic about the project. I had many emails and constant info on the fabrication process. He had the complete setup finished in two weeks. Since I did not want to mess with the rusted exhaust bolts I decided to have VISION MOTORSPORTS in Laguna Hills, CA complete the process. I purchased the items for the project including the heat backdate hardware, gaskets, heater ducts, and hosing from our host: Pelican Parts. Initially I was hesitant to install a dual exhaust system because of the increased noise. Keep in mind I am 41 years old and did not want a car that sounded like a modified Subaru. However, Ben convinced me that the new Gen 5 muffler should be quieter than the existing Gen 4 muffler. In addition, the twin cats in parallel would bring down the db level even further.
First, the new exhaust system sounds absolutely nothing like my previous setup. As Ben promised, the new exhaust is no louder than my previous, but sounds much better. I absolutely loved the rumble of the prior system. However, the new exhaust is unbelievable!!!! Believe it or not, the new dual exhaust sounds more like a 997 rather than the older Carrera. At 2600 to 4000 RPM the car makes a musical note so sweet and mesmerizing Mozart would be jealous! The sound is a mix between my prior 997 with a TUBI exhaust and a new GT3. You must hear it to believe it! My butt dyno tells me I have lost a tiny bit of torque down low, but the gains in the mid range and top end more than make up for the loss.

I currently have the two cats off because:
1) It is almost too quiet with them installed, much quieter than the prior setup.
2) I am going to have a custom chip made by Steve Wong and I want to see he can squeeze out of it on a dyno.

"The CAR"

"The HEADERS and MUFFLER"

"THE OLD DATED SETUP"

DITTO.
I MUST hear your car.
I really like the sound of my buddy's '86 w/ cat bypass + M&K ?Gen 1 in/out, but it sounds like your new system sounds different.
If this system sounds anything like a 997/Tubi, then I must have one.
I heard Champion Motorsport's 997/Tubi at the Ventura show, and it was downright outrageous.

btw, I assume with the Cats, your system will pass smog......right?

thanks
Mike

My prior exhaust system

This is my prior system. This photo is from my recent motor rebuild at Vision Motorsports.

I loved the sound and performance of this system. However, I thought I might be able to squeeze out a few more HP from the custom setup.

I've been following this project since I first heard about it. It looks every bit as my best expectations. Super work for a guy with really cool ideas.

I have an earlier 1 in, 1 out B&K muffler that I'm very happy with, just enough sound... The welding on your muffler is artistry. I'm anxious to know the results of the dyno test.

very nice - Ben are you going to try for a "bolt-on" CARB certification? Like the kind Richard Parr got for his PMO carbs?

Unfortunatly I am not well versed in what exactly CARB requires so at this point No but if I had a few folks more interested in these I might fixture them and make them up for customer and then follow up with CARB certs

I was hoping someone was going to ask the question, what is the "bolt-on" CARB certification"?

Thanks,

I dunno much about it, but aftermarket parts can be made legal for use in Calif. if they go thru a testing & documentation procedure with CARB (Calif. Air Resources Board). That way anyone can buy them and/or have them installed, you don't fail smog, etc.

I believe there may be some way for an indiv. car to be certified but an ordinary 911 is not worth that much trouble - not sure which way Bruce Canepa went with the 959s.

Sometimes, indiv. car owners remove the smog equipment in a (usually vain) search for 8 more hp. This is a really bad idea because the minimal or no hp gain can carry with it a huge fine, and even prison time.

The State is starting to use sniffers ( a trailer with a mobile Gas Chromatograph or something similar) mounted on it. These can detect and photograph cars on entrance ramps, etc. If you ever get something like this in the mail and have illegally modified your car, you could be in big trouble. My advice would to NOT lie (Gee, I dunno who did that to my car...), shut up, and get a lawyer.

If air pollution is not regulated and is not a problem where you live, then you can mod your car all you like. That usually means you live in a cool climate... and particulates (e.g. diesel, smoke, etc.) will be the problem (not HC, NOx, or CO). As one example, where I live, the biggest air pollution problem is from... farmers who grow grass seed. The extra pollen and smoke from field burning causes millions of dollars of medical problems every year. #2 is particulates, and we rarely have "smog" issues (HC, NOx, CO combine to form "smog" when it is hot).
