Pertronix "fit"

i just installed a Pertronix unit in my distributor from my '73 911E. the instructions say that the bottom of the firing module should be even with the bottom of the round magnetic device that slips onto the shaft of the distributor. the Pertronix unit is the correct one for my distributor, and the magnetic unit is properly fitted onto the distributor shaft.

in my case, the firing unit seems to fit about 1/8" too high compared to the round magnetic device that slips on the distributor shaft. it is as if the mounting plate is 1/8" too thick, raising up the bottom of the firing module just a wee bit too high.

i have not installed the unit in the car yet, so i wanted to ask fellow Pelican Pertronix folks if the fit i am describing is common? or should the two parts line up exactly as the instructions say they should?

again, it only seems about 1/8" too high, but before i go to the trouble of firing up the car, I thought I would check the BBS for comments.

thanks.

bad memory thinks my unit is misaligned to fit the non rev limit rotor. Never been a problem in operation.

+1 I seem to remember the firing unit didn't set flush on the plate, but like RoninLB, it worked fine and I never had a problem.

(BTW, I noticed in your signature that we are neighbors! I just acquired a 73T, and would love to meet up with fellow long hood sometime!)

I'm just up the road from you guys as well. I'd like to know what you think of the Pertronix once it's installed.

It's been good to me and i hate electronics for reliability.

a pelicanhead posted not to leave ignition "on" for a while or it'll cook the Pertronix.

I also wired a spare Pertronix so I can r&r quickly on the side of the road. I use a connector buss with soldered wire ends so it's a wham bam.

also my timing changed when I removed and replaced the unit.

I have a 73T and wondered what do you do to run the stock tach? I have been thinking about getting the crane unit from our sponsor.

MSD's tach operation info covers different systems.

Sherwood/911pcars uses the Crane. I figure he'd use the best Crane model. Sherwood knows good stuff.

Thanks for the reply, but I was planning on keeping the stock CDI.

Rick,, Check the unit that bolts to the bottom of your distributor and make sure the index pins are lined up correctly and that it's laying flat on the floor (advance plate) of the distributor If the index isn't sitting correctly, then it may appear to be "raised"
