My guess would be the bracket the secures the main post has broken. The main post is the part that divides the vent window from the main window. At the bottom of that, inside the door is a bracket that often breaks and rattles.
You need to pull the door panel and look inside the speaker hole to find it. Takes an allen wrench to pull it.

Take a look at the window channels. I suspect some of the felt is missing.

that sounds accurate. i need to remove the door panels or just inspect the window frame? i dont recall seeing anything wrong with the actual window frame...at least, i know there is no material missing that is visible

Just look at the window frame first, the part above the door shell. Compare the left and right sides, to see if they look different. Wiggle the glass with your hands a little bit. If you can't find any problems, pull the door panel and make sure everything is still properly attached inside the door.

I had the problem on the driver side. I fond a thread that iscussed all the possibilities. One was a simple adjustment of the mechanizm. There are to bolt heads about 2 inches apart n the middle of the door panel removed). I made very slight ajustments to them and tested fo rattle. It was gone and has not eturned. Wish I could be mor technical but you may want to look at a manual or find hat thread.

Good luck.
