2.7 engine part interchangibility with 2.2?

Please excuse my ignorance on this, but I'm wondering how many bits and pieces of a 2.7 could potentially work on a 2.2, particularly cams and rockers.

Can you swap them over? I mean, the cam towers from a 2.7 into a 2.2?

Thanks!

You can use
- camtowers
- cams probably not (except for the euro carrera)
- rockers (but I am not sure it is a good idea to use them on a different cam, or on another place on the same cam), have them resurfaced.
- oil pump
- chains, sprockets, chainboxes etc.

I'd use the crank and rods too!

My advice to you is.... depends on whether you have more of the 2.7 than the 2.2. I'd take the 2.2 case to a machine shop that does only porsche cases and heads like Ollie's in Santa Ana, Calif. Have the case bored out to 2.7 spects. and have the heads rebuilt. Have them check the crank to see if std and have just micro polished... or grind to 10 overs. They will even supply you with the proper m/m copper spacers for your barrel seats. Buy a complete new set of 2.7 Mahle pistons (includes barrels and rod pins and keepers.... I found a set for $1300. Get a set of S cams...on ebay for 120. like I did. Use your towers, but have oil spuirters check... they do that too. Flush out and pressure test your oil cooler and you're on your way.

It's best to plan a rebuild like this well in advance. Locating S cams and an RS P/C set at those prices requires some patience, research and luck.

good advie

Relayswitcher - this is good stuff, thanks. I have a 2.2 engine w/ carbs that was installed (hack job) into a '75 Targa. Apparently the oil spurter - or whatever it is called - got clogged on #6, and the cam and rocker are extremely worn - the rest of the cams and rockers are in good shape.

I've been looking for replacement cams, new they're pretty expensive, as I'm sure most here know. I've found a source for some used cam towers - complete with cams and rockers - from a 2.7 at a decent price, hence my question about how many parts can be swapped into a 2.2 from 2.7 engines.

I just want to get the car on the road for a couple of months and then will try my hand at rebuilding the engine when winter hits here in the fall. The car is merely an around town runabout for me. I've haven't owned it for long, but want to enjoy a bit of driving before I have to get my hands covered in oil!

Ideas, suggestions, input welcome.

Thanks,

---

Tom
