Question-Clear coat over polished fan?

Should I clear coat over my newly polished fan? Will it yellow? I believe my wheel lips are clear coated and they seem to be holding up. Anyone out there have experience with this?

Cheers

I clear coated the fan, and after 3 years about half the finish has flaked off. I think corrosion tunneled under the coating and popped it off.

I used Wurth Lacquer Spray Special (RAL1930) on my sand blasted fan and housing - it has held up well.

I polished mine and then powder coated clear. The pc is staying on just fine but the fan is no longer shiney as the mag fan has oxidized under the clear coat. Actually like the look of the fan this way. No pics of the way it is now but this is the way it started.

Yup! what Byron said.
powder coat is the way to go on a spinning component which is subject to rock and sand impacts, as well as weather damage. Powdercoating is a great solution to all these ailments.

So the magnesium oxidized despite clear coating?? Yikes.
So is there any way to keep this polished look? (besides elbow grease)

Did the Magnesium react with the coating in an oxidation reaction or is the coating porus enough to let in oxygen? Or was air trapped in there while coating?

I glass blasted my fan housing and fan, and treated with Gibbs brand.

Another here for glass + gibbs.

I would consider anodize before I would consider powder coating.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like lots of ways to go about it. Would there be any clearance issues with powder coating? Also, is there a woodruff key on the Turbo models. My alternator and fan have slots for one but it was not there when I took it apart. Does the washer put pressure against the alternator? In the parts catalog I do not see a key listed.

Cheers

I have read threads right here on Pelican that explain some people have had to sand the PC off the ends of the blades so that they would clear the housing. Unfortunately, this creates a wide-open area for moisture and oxygen to infiltrate between the magnesium and the PC - creating a potential corrosion area.

If you polish the fan and don't coat it with something it will simply tarnish very quickly when left exposed to air, raw magnesium just behaves like this. So if you are not going to coat it then don't bother polishing it.

Magnesium oxidizes even after being powder coated. I have no problem with the PC on the fan. The aluminum intake that I powder coated looks just like it did when it was done 3 years ago. There was a thread here on PP about this that I read saying the fan would oxidize underneath the PC. Thought I would try it anyway. The only way to keep them shiny IMHO is to keep polishing an uncoated fan. I will get a current picture of the fan posted as soon as I can. This is the aluminum intake using the same PC as the fan.

The problem with magnesium is that it's microscopically porous, and there's absolutely no way to get foreign elements--dirt, etc.--totally out of those pores. So when you coat it--I tried using a POR-15 product, can't remember exactly what it was called--they soon begin to do whatever they're gonna do (corrode, oxidize, whatever) under the coating no matter how hard and permanant that coating is supposed to be. Bottom line is there's no way to coat a fan with anything that'll work.

I may have been the first with the Gibbs on the fan... held up really nice and developed a good magnesium patina, grey and non-oxidized look.
