If you left your 69 Targa in a field in TX...

since 1991, it would look like this. Car will undergo a thorough restoration over the next few years and will include new floors, inner and outer rockers, front clip, and center tunnel at a minimum. New doors, front fenders as well. Longitudinals look surprising good, but you never know.

Too much rust to save.

BlueSideUp 06-07-2008 02:49 PM

wow that's one hell of a project.

SCWDP911 06-07-2008 03:08 PM

I have got to watch this one. Is it me, or does that look worse than the one speedo started with?

Good luck Shaun!

JFairman 06-07-2008 03:47 PM

does the radio work?

jmz 06-07-2008 04:01 PM

My Dad's a T.V. repairman and he's got the ultimate set of tools. ...bring it over and we can fix it.

herman maire 06-07-2008 04:10 PM

I love the early "S" cars but damn.... that is a hella lot of rust. It kinda reminds me of my 356 that I bailed on.

I wish you the best of luck on this one, it looks like it will need the complete bottom half of a good tub.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! scary. Definition scary (sker′ē)

adjective scar′i·er, scar′i·est

causing alarm; frightening

SCWDP911 06-07-2008 04:32 PM

What Shaun has not told you yet is that he just this week secured rights to pen the next best-seller: "The Gold Plated Porsche: Part Zwie" (please forgive if my german is misspelled)

skinnerd 06-07-2008 05:13 PM

wow........you're a brave man

9dreizig 06-07-2008 05:14 PM

Shaun, just put some carpet over it!

Bill Douglas 06-07-2008 05:29 PM

What! in a field in Texas, and no one shot it.

jcunning 06-07-2008 05:29 PM

I'm afraid if you acid dip that car to remove the rust, it might eat the whole car!
That would be funny though. You lift the chains and nothing comes out!

Good luck with this one.

Zeke 06-07-2008 05:35 PM

Why, man, because it's an S? All that thin stuff way back in the rear sub frame has got to be toast. I don't know if they even make enough replacement parts for a job like that. You're gonna be buying some serious metal working tools would be my bet.

Or you need to move next door to me. :D

I wish Milt! By the time I'm able to earnestly start on it, might be a possibility.

I've now parted and cut up a 71 coupe, 70 and 73 Targa over the past few years and have a good feel for what I'll need and how I'll be able to find it. One sad note is that I just cut up a perfect 73 tunnel for friend who needed the pipe outlets on the end.:(

And I did say years. This car won't see the road until 2013 at the earliest. :) I can tell you that the back seats are very good. the vertical in front of them is thin though. the windshield tray is perfect as well as as the rear deck. if the longitudinals were gone, I'd consider parting it or selling to someone more foolish than myself, but as I said, they look pretty good.

But to answer your question, yes. This is probably the only Velvet Green 69S Targa on the planet, and that's worth saving. And more evidence (see below) for why it's worth saving. When was the last time you saw a 69 anything with original sticker, etc.

My plan is simple: strip the rest of it, especially to add to my CAD plating order for the E and get the motor out to take the stress out of the rear of the body...tuck that away until I rebuild it (hah!) or perhaps Mr. Kinder will, and then make a list of what I'll need just to get the unibody back together. After that it's about finding the right donor car for some pieces, Restoration Design others.

I sure am glad I kept the pedal cluster from the 73!

Porsche-O-Phile 06-07-2008 06:05 PM

I admire your enthusiasm, but I think that is gonna' be a helluva lot more work than you think.

1982911SCTarga 06-07-2008 06:17 PM

Shaun, you are one steely eyed missile man for taking this project on. Porsche should really recognize folks like you and others on this board that pull off these incredible saves -- a badge of honor or something for preserving Zuffenhausen's finest.

One question: On the window sticker, is the "Self-leveling Front Supension" otherwise known as the 911E-type hydropneumatic suspension? Wouldn't that be kind of an unusual thing on an S?

Best of luck in bringing your car back to a happy on-the-road life.

Brian

theclaw 06-07-2008 06:20 PM

Anybody who can find a car with side tinted windows that cost only $9.75 extra has my vote. Have at it.

boxster03 06-07-2008 06:32 PM

would it ever be a safe car? I would not buy it after the repairs thats for sure

Nine17 06-07-2008 06:39 PM

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade, but the best and highest use of that pile of iron oxide is as a fab garden ornament. Unless of course you've no compunctions about committing fraud and have got a solid LWB 911T Targa to VIN-switch into an S and sell at the next major-label auction for silly money...

RWebb 06-07-2008 06:54 PM

wow - if you do complete it, you'll get some kind of award for "best save" from "worst car"

Good Luck

PS - am collecting a few odds & ends to add to the beer money for the clutch arm - you'll see that soon & Thanks again for the arm

cgarr 06-07-2008 06:58 PM

Would it then have a salvage title or not? Looks like you will be replacing everything around the vin numbers? no?

SCWDP911 06-07-2008 07:00 PM

I pm'd him earlier and said we should call it the "Brought it Back From the Most Dead" award

thanks Randy, glad you got the arm OK. On the car, I'm not sure I'll be doing the welding. I'm comfortable with floors and panels, for example the front end would be fine for me, but this car is above my current skill level given the state of the rear floors. I will either give it to someone like Series900 who has a Celette and can make the car whole again, or build a jig/frame myself and go very slowly, or maybe get Tim Hancock to come out for a week to get it going.:D

The doors close nicely with the standard "ring" of early cars. it's worth saving, just like the few 356 speedsters that were probably junked 30 years ago were.

Nevermind all those who say "You can't". You'll be listening to them for years, get used to it. All the youcants in my life are currently eating large piles of crow.

Can this car be restored:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1212895573.jpg

Yes - it CAN.

rennch 06-07-2008 08:42 PM

Don't show it to Lars (Speedo)...he'll fly out and steal it from you. :)

Wayne 962 06-07-2008 08:56 PM

That needs some work.

So, the owner kept the original paperwork, but decided to just trash the car by leaving it in a field? Odd...

I recently sold some '69 sheetmetal to Eade Hopkinson, you might need some here!

Maybe you can work out a package deal from these guys: http://www.restoration-design.com/index.html

You know you basically need one of everything they make

Good luck Shuan, will be a job and 3/4 but you can do it.

Shaun @ Tru6 06-08-2008 05:12 AM

Thanks Dave, and thank God it's only the gas tank support on the front end I'll need to do. did you post on fixing that crossmember mounting point.

let's talk paint in 2012 Mark.:D

I guess I should have posted what color to paint the 75 Carrera. I'd have 30 pages of positive vibes. :p

mark 74 carrera 06-08-2008 05:41 AM

I am with dtw. It's your car. I am taking the same approach (stash it away, collect parts and then get to work) on my second car. I can't wait to see this car in 2013!

thank you Brian! yes, I thought it strange that it would have the E hydropneumatic front suspension, but clearly this was a personalized car for it's first owner. Sourcing those will probably prove to be the most difficult part of the entire project. It's got the standard 3.5 Koni upgrade from the 70s.

having the window sticker, it would be very interesting to get the Porsche COA and see how well they match.

mjshira 06-08-2008 06:13 AM

I personally could not imagine taking on that project, wow!

competentone 06-08-2008 07:10 AM

The guy I sold this one to was planning on repairing it. He said he'd send me pictures of the finished product:

Kudos to you, Shaun.....My TR4 sat in a field for over 20 years, and I was able to bring it back. A Sawzall, mig welder, and patience will take you far.....

I was 14 when I started the project (with help of my dad).....and I had it finished by my senior year in high school. It was the ultimate learning experience, and confidence builder. I did everything by myself, from the ground up, including painting. If I goofed something up, I redid it, and learned from my mistakes.

When it was time for paint and body work, I took a class at the Continuing Education part of our community schools. I spent 80 shop hours on the hood (bonnet for British folks) alone. When I needed to get paint supplies, I asked a local paint shop if he needed help around his shop. My payment? All of the sandpaper, and paint materials I needed. Heck, he even showed me how to mix paint, and I mixed my own paint when it was time for it....

Keep at it!!
