Changing oil for the first time
The question I have is. I'm assuming the drain plug is righty tighty, lefty loosy. But for some reason its on there really tight. so I wanted to ask before I mess something up. Is there a trick or any advice that someone can give me to help get it off? Thanks Jake

Hmmmm, Sounds like PO or Wrench over torqued it. Make certain it is the correct socket and use and extension to get leverage.
The Torque Settings are: Crankcase 52lbs Oil Tank 30lbs It will seem light but do not over torque it. Oh yeah use new oil plug gaskets ALso do not over fill the oil. 10.5 quarts. You must bring it up to normal operating temperature and running to check the levels. Above is for 84-89's

Put a pipe on the end of your ratchet and pull. (Ghetto Extension) Make certain the socket is the 6 sided one not the universal type

Breaker bar did the trick! Now I dont have new gaskets but the ones that are on there now look perfect. Do you think they will be ok. and also I live in DC with stop and go and blazing heat. has anyone used 20-50 oil and did it keep you cooler? Thanke for all the help guys! Jake

What he said...
get behind the passenger side rear, put your feet on the bumper and pull w/ a cheater bar. make sure the oil pan is under it. make sure there's a pillow on the floor for your head when it lets go. |

Congrats, just make certain you use proper torque on those puppies for future acts of love.
Yeah, it will be OK but please next time use new ones. The PO/Wrench over torque may have damaged it where you can't see it. My 2 cents. I use Brad Penn 20/50 and it definitely keeps my baby cooler but be aware that it will take longer to bring up to Proper Operating Temperature (1st middle dash or 8:00 o Clock)

That would be Lefty Loosey (counter clockwise)
Try never to push only pull on a wrench.

already answered but ill say again. first time i changed mine, both were impossible. used a breaker bar. no problem. didnt have new washers. used the old. no problem. i bought new ones AND new plugs for the 2nd oil change. when i tighten, i tighten down very gently until it stops and then give 1 good medium strength tug on the wrench. there is no need to over tighten them

I was afraid to go with synthetic because of the leaking issues. But I use it in all my other cars

as far as i can tell, the PO used it for 10 years so i continue. no leaks whatsoever. you can try next time and if it leaks, switch back
some leak, some dont. my car has 100K miles, no engine work ever. no leaks, with the exception of a hose i need to fix there are some good threads on this site about non-synth vs synth oil. do a search if your bored.
