78SC ROW - What Kind of Exhaust system do I have -- new pics . . .

Hi guys,

I have a 78SC ROW, non-federalized and I took better pics of my exhaust to try to find out what kind I have.

I used some brushed-wool and oven cleaner, it appears I have stainless SSI's.

1. What kind of exhaust setup do I have?
2. What is the best way to clean them - other than oven-cleaner?

Thanks in advance!

yes they are SSI's. you should see an imprint of "SSI" on the bottom there. i used a wire brush on my air rotary tool. worked great.
Also what do you mean by "what setup do i have"?

As far as i know yes its a standard setup for a ROW SC. When you have dual in SSI's like this you cant have a cat (no room for one).

I have a 79 ROW setup just like yours, mine did when new had a air pump but was removed somewhere along the line.

The ROW 911SC had the same exhaust system that the US cars did, apart from the catalytic converter. A ROW car had a premuffler, the early US SC had a 2-way cat and the 80-on US SC had a 3-way cat. All of the 911SC cars used the same heat exchangers, the output of which was directed towards the front of the car. A crossover pipe funneled the exhaust gases from the right side of the engine over to the left side of the car. The premuffler, or cat, had two inlets (one for the exhasut from each side) and was located parallel to the left side of the engine. The muffler had one inlet and one outlet, both on the left side.

What you have is a system that duplicates the layout of the exhaust used on all 911s up until 1975.

You have SSIs, they are a very good aftermarket heater box/header system which are an improved version of the heater box/header system used on most 9111s > '74

The oem exhaust looked like this, the pipe on the far left is an aftermarket cat by pass and the 2 short/bent pipes in the middle have nothing to do w/ this system
