can you solve this?

My son has come home from school with a puzzle that I can't figure out.
I'm sure the answer is simple but for the world of me I can't figure it out.

There are three missionaries and three cannibals together on the same side of a river. There is one boat that will hold a maximum of two people. No one can touch the water and the boat can not be sent back empty.
You must get all six to the other side of the river, but the cannibals can never out number the missionaries, ever, or as my son says they will eat them.


Any help would be appreciated so I can continue to fool my son into thinking that I am not just some middle aged guy trying my best, and maybe for one more day he will still consider me super Dad.

1 cannibal and 1 missionary there, missionary back. 2 cannibals there, 1 cannibal back. 2 missionaries there, 1 missionary and 1 cannibal back. 2 missionaries there, 1 cannibal back. This one cannibal takes the remaining cannibals to the other side.

very complicated answer.
missionary and cannibal there, drop off the missionary. the cannibal stays in the boat and alternates cannibal then missionary.

How about his solution:

Cannibals eat missionaries, two cannibals over, one returns to get the third then all three cannibals go on their merry way with full bellies (the missionaries) and free to practice any religion they choose.

This is a better problem:

There are three missionaries and three cannibals working on an ’86 3.2 with a low idle problem. One missionary has replaced the Idle Control Valve. One of the Cannibals has checked and set the Idle Switch. One of the missionaries has replaced the O2 sensor. One of the cannibals has replaced the one-wire Cylinder Head Temperature sensor with a new multi-wire unit and really got pissed off at that F’ing grommet from Hell. One of the missionaries checked for vacuum leaks and found nothing. One of the cannibals adjusted the idle mixture by jumpering the B-C connector and bypassing the ICV to no avail.

Question: Why the hell won’t the 86 3.2 idle at 880rpm like it should, and do cannibals really eat missionaries because they taste like chicken?
