H5 to H4 wiring questions
I've ordered the H4s to put in my '87. I need to convert the socket/plug from the one for the H5 to the H4. Can someone offer the correct wire-to-wire splice? Which color on the H5 goes where on the H4 socket/plug?
Also, a good source for quality connectors, and which type is recommended. Not planning to wire in the "city light". Any particular reason why I should change my mind? Thanks.

VW speciality houses or Autozone have the plugs. Do not attempt the H5 -H4's without a Sucro relay system installed, otherwise you will weld your contacts in your stalk in short order. Our host also supplies a relay upgrade kit for $25 plus shippinig.

You don't need the sucro relay system if you stay w/ stock wattage on the bulbs. 60/55 or so.
Many succumb to the urge to go to higher wattage with H4s, so often the relays are recommended. It won't hurt, but not necessary. Last edited by tcar; 07-01-2008 at 01:04 PM.. |

Hmmmm, that reminds me...May I interest you in a slightly used stalk that was in place when I went to stock wattage bulbed H4's? I didn't think so...

I did this conversion and I'd recommend the relay kit, if for nothing else to eliminate the voltage passing through your turn signal harness and lengthen its life. Go to PepBoys, Autozone, etc........they'll have the correct 3-prong H4 socket. I found mine in the "ricer" aisle....rubber protection over the terminals and heavier gauge wiring than stock. Just cut the wires from your H5 sockets and splice in the new ones. Ground is ground which will be brown on both the left and right sides of your existing H5 sockets. The rest is pretty intuitive if you're careful and duplicate the same orientation of the wires for the replacement socket at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock. The most you can do wrong as far as incorrect wiring (assuming that you've got the ground is correct) is that the brights will go OFF when you hit the brights and/or the brights will come ON when the lows should be on. I wired the city lights by splicing into a nearby parking light wire. I use it on overcast days in urban traffic.

I didn't cut my wireing harness when I installed h1's instead of h4's in my 89, I bought male H5 plugs and female H4 plug and made a pigtail adapter so if I want to change later I can do so.

Look at the wires near the present H5 socket. Are they darkened/black? This may be a great opportunity to rewire the buckets. And I too, would use the Sucro relay or a build-your-own since the stalk is a well-known failure point.
Daniel Stern Lighting sells the heavy-duty H4 socket if you plan to use higher wattage lamps. Ian
