What crash helmet to buy?

Hi all,

I'm planing to attend the next DE in my area. I see that I need a crash helmet. Does anyone have any guidance on what to buy? I don't want to spend silly money, but nor do I want to get something that is not up to the job. Trouble is that I currently know nothing about helmets.

Thanks,

Let's not call it a "crash" helmet.

Buy the one that fits, and qualifies for the purpose you need it for (motorcycle helmets are usually not approved for use in a car). Consider full face or open face with regard to your car, and what your event organizers like to see on your head (I wear a full face helmet in a closed coupe for an extra margin of safety). The amount of money that you spend is usually dictated by how light the helmet is, and you also want to talk to your event organizers to learn what Snell requirement they require.

Helmet

Buy the helmet that is commensurate with the value of the brain
that will be floating within.

Cheap Brain = Cheap Helmet.

Do the math.

I have used BELL for years and am still alive and kicking.

I recently purchase a Bell M4. It's SA2005 rated, so it will be accepted by any group putting on the DE. $379.

If it's your first DE, you're in for a treat!

I think the general concensus is to buy a helmet that fits you well and is SA2005. On the low end you can get into a helmet for just under $200 and they go up from there. I would suggest trying on some helmets to make sure they fit your head. im sure there is some variance in what a medium is from brand to brand.

Helmet prices can quickly rise offering features such as carbon fiber and other goodies such as lightness.

As long as its SA2005, you should be good to go in most circles.

post a pic once you find one you like!

Thanks all. I especially like EP Slicks' "cheap brain = cheap helmet" comment.

I'll also try not to call it a "crash" helmet. Wouldn't want to jinx myself!

From an old comedy routine:

Interviewer: Is that a crash helmet you have there?

Astronaut: Oh, I hope not.

Who can remember the comedian?

I just bought a Pyrotect open face SA2005 for ~$150. I believe Pyrotect are made by Bell.
