Yes. You must have some means to split the signal from the Carrera DME to run the lower plugs. The Andial splitter is a popular solution.

Isn't Andial just duplicating the factory 964 setup? Two ignitors, one for each coil. And both ignitor get the same signal from the DME.

Well, maybe they process the original signal from the 3.2 DME with a simple inverting Schmidt Trigger: The spark occors on the falling slope of the signal. For the ignitors it might be the opposite.

There's a solution to every problem :)

One more issue has arose in fitting the 964 dizzy to my '87 Carrera. One of the upper bolts holding the timing cover onto the engine gets in the way of the distributor fully seating into its position. Check this out:

There's virtually no room for the nut on the stud. As you can see, i've taken it out to fit the dizzy in place. Is it standard to leave this stud out when installing the 964 dizzy on the Carrera? Or is there some REALLY flat bolt head I could use?

Andy, I am going form memory more than two years ago when I did mine but I remember I had to take off some of the boss on one of the chain covers and use a shorter stud for mine to fit. It must have been in that area? You should also need a longer mounting stud to hold the dizzy down too?

I had the same clearance issue. I shortened the stud with a dremel cutoff wheel and solved the problem that way. I probably should have just got a shorter stud, but at the moment of choice my dremel looked lonely and in need of a new purpose. :)

One more question for you guys. It doesn't seem like I have any choice, but is there any issue with drilling out this section of the RHS chain housing to fit the lower #4 plug?

How about a screw where the stud was.

No issue with the chain housing mod, it has to be done.

Thanks for the reinforcement!

I thought I'd add to this thread for future reference to anyone putting in a splitter. The green wire is pretty easy to find in the DME bundle. It is the larger of three green wires. On my '84, the black wire ISN'T in that bundle. It is the larger of the black wires in the bundle coming along the left of the driver's footwell and which enters the LH seat rail. Both the green and black wires were about .113" overall diameter, compared to about .084" for the other wires of the same color. YMMV. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272841280.jpg

NGK 6EKUB is a 14 mm thread with a 5/8 drive. I use these with my 12 plug distributor and MSD CDI and twin coils.
