starting issues part deux

I know this is posted all of the time but I just had a moment of success based on a tip in an earlier post so I thought I'd share.

My 85 Carrera decided to go back to it's old ways and simply give up starting once again. I had terrible troubles with it a couple of months ago and have no idea why it cleared up. This time I think I have it whipped!

Here's the scenario. The key actuates the fuel pump but the solenoid does not engage. I replaced the starter and ran voltage checks everywhere. Everything checks out fine. The battery is fine and I checked all of the grounds, again. Still no luck. I check the DME, nothing. If I run a remote I can turn the starter. Thank God, as I was worried it might be something more costly than a DME or starter.

Here is what cleared it up. Based on an earlier post I wiggled the positive battery cable and followed all of the hot leads (and there are several that have accumulated over the years) back to the firewall. I didn't remove, disconnect or replace anything. It just started. I obviously have a bad 12v from the battery, but it still reads 12.5v to the starter. So it cant be bad, right? Wrong, apparently. The problem must be how much current is traveling through the old wires. The potential is there but the current must be diminished enough to prevent the solenoid from engaging. I will replace the wires this weekend and repost when I get it rewired.

Victory is mine!!
