Quick key ignition question

I ordered keys for a 1966 ignition that are close...but don't insert all the way in the ignition. I have already re-keyed the door handles and am having a problem releasing the tumblers on the ignition
How do I get the tumblers free from the aluminum column
If I can get the tumblers free, I can modify them to get the key to work. Help me out here
