GPS mount solution in 911>>>
not having a GPS in the 911 is probably the only modern thing i want in this car... I hate windshield mountes so i looked to the Modshack for a solution on this....
Steve has a GadgeTT that he has conjured up for the Audi TT community that works perfectly on the 911 gauges......here is a setup specifically for the Garmin Nuvi... ![]() This mount fits slickly over the clock or the fuel/oil level gauge..... ![]() Mounted around gauge.... ![]() ![]() Nuvi mounted in a perfect spot.... ![]() The nice part about this solution is that it could be used for ANYTHING...IPOD, Phone mount....even a camera mount centerboard.... If there was anything heavy that would need to be mounted here, I would probably put a dab of silicone on the edge of the gauge to hold the ring in place... Steve has a ton of solutions here... http://public.fotki.com/ttschwing/gadgetts_and_stuff/the_gadgett/ My understanding he has a big shipment of these coming in shortly (like 2 weeks)....and for those that are interested in different colors, or finishes...contact Steve....he does his own powder coating! PM me is you want more pix or info... |

Very cool. I ended up attaching one of the sticky discs to the underside of my cruise control 'brain' and using the suction mount on it, but your solution would certainly be easier to see.

That is slick too....
as i am slowly removing all the AC stuff, there is really nothing beneath the dash that works for me now..... As i said, the suction cup solution on the windshield was not an option....i am working with Steve on a couple of other variants on this including a camera mount.... My final goal is GPS on the left gauge and the MP3/Camera mount on the clock....more to come...but this is a great start! |

Garmin has pretty good setup and strong antenna......i would bet it does, but probably loses a BIT of reception.....more than likely moot in most cases....
In my TT if i mount the Garmin Nuvi on my left vent, it loses 1 bar of reception versus the center mounted vent ring....apparently the A pillar and glass angle hurt a bit! |

VERY slick.
How did you hide the power cable?

No. It takes a lot longer to pick them up, but once it has them, no more problems. Biggest issue I have is that I can't hear the voice prompts over the flat six, so I have to set it to visual-only!

Garmin do an external antenna for the Nuvi for installations like this, kinda undoes the effort to conceal stuff though

I am a heartbeat away from installing a Dice ipod holder somewhere under the dash or on the side of the console but I hate to look down while driving. This could be a great option.
Thanks, Greg |

Slick installation; however, staring down at the GPS unit while driving seems kind of dicey, especially in the under-dash mount example shown above. I'd much rather keep the unit at eye level so I can keep my eyes on the road and it has the side benefit of better GPS performance (more satellites received).

I worried about that, but in reality you only have to glance at the unit briefly while driving. Plus I rarely use it, so it doesn't obscure my view when not in use. Lots more discussion here; Show me your GPS installs Cheers, Paul.

Thanks Paul. I'll give this some thought and maybe take the plunge on one of these installations.

That is the GadgeTT v5.....it has the mount specific to the Garmin Nuvi....you can request a regular ball mount too....I think there is a Tom Tom version as well...but you would need to double check with Steve....

Working on a concealed solution that will be slick.....for now, the power lead is on the passenger side of the Nuvi, so it is not an issue to access the lighter. I will be doing something that will allow me to move it from car to car......i am even considering a version for my 356! ;-)

I just finished my Dice ipod install with Steve's help. After seeing this post I contacted Steve and he did a little research on the Dice ipod holder. His selection of the iphone setup was a perfect match for the Dice. I tried to use the ring and ball but I just didn't like the stability of the setup. I wound up drilling a 1/4" hole under the oil temp/level gauge and mounted the ball there. It is rigid as can be and a perfect reach while driving. The ipod is also in line with the gauges so I don't have to look down. To hide the evidence I only need a 1/4" black plastic plug and it all goes away. Thanks Steve for the help.

I got this unit mainly for the GPS function but it is a pretty darn good radio as well as being able to play DVD movies, MP3s, CDs, etc.... It is made by Farenheit and fits in your radios single DIN slot. It doesn't retract, merely folds flat as seen in the 2nd photo. Comes with a remote and you can store songs on SD cards and play them from there if you like.

I thought I read it somewhere, tried it, and it works. With my Garmin 260, I just pull down the 84's ashtray, set the bottom of the Garmin on the ashtray and push in on the top until it "clips" into place. Great for the open road trips when you don't have to watch it closely.
But if I really need to "use" it, I do prefer eye-level on the windshield.
