Auxillary Oil Cooler ?

At what temperature is the fenderwell mounted thermostat supposed to open and allow oil to flow to the front fender mounted oil cooler?

What actual temp on the gauge with temp readings, and what line on the idiot gauge with lines?

The thermostat should be all the way open by 190 degrees.

Any idea as to where 190* would be on gauges with just the stupid lines? When fully warmed up, my 3.2 oil temp gets up to the first line, maybe a hair more, but I have no idea what temp that relates to.

Reason I ask is that I have a crushed return line and have no idea if oil is getting past the crush or not. The car sure does not run hot, but I would like to know if oil is actually running through that line. It will get changed out after the season either way, but it would be nice to know.

To add to Stveve's info, the aux t-stat for the front circuit starts to open @113*F

I believe that these are the Carrera temp scales

OK, so if those pics are accurate, my temp would be in the 190-200 range. Definitely enough to at least start opening the thermostat.

As for feeling the oil line, every time I say I am going to do it after a run, I forget.

3 things I will be doing................

1. Touch the lines after a run to check for hot oil running through them.
2. Replace return line over the winter.
3. Replace my stupid lined gauge with a degree marked one. (I know there is a place that does this, but can't remember who. If someone has the link, please post it)

Someone may need to confirm.

The numbered guage requires a different sender, both are available by our host.

Do an easy search.

The old numbered Gauge needs a different sender, but N. Hollywood can just redo the face

I called N.Hollywood and they said you do need a new sending unit due to when they do the new face, they re-calibrate the stock gauge. Cost is around $140.

Anyone ever get work done by BigMarks?

What's up with that? Did you just have the faces redone or did they do an overhaul? Why would the guy tell me they overhaul the whole thing? Things that make you go, Hmmmmmmmmm.

They replace the temp guage with a VDO unit, silk-scrren the face, and provide a new sender. The old numerical temp kit is NLA. At least, I couldn't find it, so I called NHS. It was quick and easy.

Makes you wonder why they can't just redo existing units face.

When I brought my C3 over from Germany they just redid the face to change from Km. to Mi., They even rolled the odometer to the correct mi equivalent and provided a certifiction document of the changes.

My friend "Nick" used to do that but never supplied any paperwork, I think he is working for the State now?

Exactly my point. My Carrera has a VDO gauge. Druck pressure on the right, oil temp on the laft with hash marks. What would be so hard to silkscreen a new face to keep the druck on the right and replace the 4 hash marks on the left with a number of lines and numerical readings? Why does the unit innards need to be changed?

I am having a hard time understanding why this is so hard to do.

Just like this, but in the original black face with white numbers.
