My "new" 911 - the trip home - NOW WITH PHOTOS

I'm thinking I should maybe post this somewhere else on the site, but this and marketplace are the only forums I've participated in here, and I wanted to share the fun with you, as you kindly entertained my many questions and helped me actually make this happen. My "new" 911 - it was everything the owner promised and more!

Flew to Houston Saturday morning, PO picked us up at the airport, we took care of business at his house, and hubby and I took off with this gorgeous car for a 800+mile drive back to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Before we left, I had the owner take me for a spin, him at the wheel, to get a feel for the car. Then he gave me a little tutorial about all the features, and walked me thru the work he'd done most recently. Turned over HEAPS of info with the car. And all his spares that I could fit - extra glass, belts, fuses, you name it, 2 boxes of stuff. Had the car all prepped for my trip. Just a great guy. He called me several times to be sure everything was going OK and seemed a little worried that we took longer than he thought we should getting home We took some serious scenic detours and had the best time. The car drives like a dream.

Will I ever not thrill at the sound of the engine starting? Do you get used to that? How about the sound of the doors closing. Do you get used to that? Because I get the sickest little thrill at the sounds - every time!

Also? The car brought out a side of me I have never before experienced. Every time a car passed me, I was all, "HEY! Heyheyhey! You're passing ME???" I didn't chase every car that passed me. Just the BMWs and Mercedes. And Mustangs. And this one Charger got on my last nerve. Haha! I better get over that REAL fast, huh?

I'll have a goofy video up tomorrow, but in the meantime I have uploaded a bunch of still shots, and three short video clips on my flickr page. Enjoy!

AND THANK YOU all for your help. From lurking here and following others' maintenance and purchase adventures, I had an idea of what to look for. Because the PPI (hookup thru a Pelican) was so very thorough, there were NO surprises. Could not have done it without you all so THANKS!

Edited to add photos - I guess the link I posted to the gazillion photos on flickr.com will not do? Many more at the above link, more than I can post here, and video clips! Go see them! Here are a few to whet your appetite:

Getting packed up for the trip to her new home:

Hubby fits? You decide!

In Bay St. Louis, MS in front of the old Firedog Saloon - this is where Jimmy Buffet shot his video "Bama Breeze.", and the bar along with the whole town of Bay St. Louis was blown away in Hurricane Katrina...

I love my new car!

Great read Kathy and congratulations. I love all those little sounds but one of my favorite is the smell when I climb into the cockpit. A mixture of age, leather, oil and gas. Ummmm I need a drive.
Welcome.

Scott

Draco's serious we NEED a picture. Now would be good.

Hope nobody takes this as heresy - but when I first sat in the car and started it up - I was immediately taken back to the 2nd car I ever drove, a 72 VW Super Beetle (with Tiptronic or what did they call it Sportmatic? 3 speed trans). It was the smell! Boy did the smell take me back. I was 17 all over again!

Nice car. I might be a bit prejudiced but I love the color of you car. What color interior does it have?

I still love the sound of my engine, the smell of the interior, and the entire package. I have had my 85 Carrera for 13 years now. Hopefully you will have a long and happy love affair with your car.

Congratulations on your old baby.

Get used to it...those cars will come find you while you drive around. Might as well start putting some money aside now for traffic tickets BMWs...Mustangs...Corvettes...the occasional Bentley...they all have a grudge against the Ever Powerful 911.

Here's a trick...if your popping along at about 3500, 4000 rpm, and floor it...well, make sure you've already changed lanes to pass that person, because you ain't gonna have time to move over once you hit the loud pedal

Are you still out in the middle of the ocean somewhere?

Fear not, I'm scheduled for my first DE at Road Atlanta in December (with NASA-SE). Can't wait! VROOM!

Nice car.... and as mentioned before: you never get used to the sound of the door and the engine coming to life.

Enjoy it!
