Clutch Adj. 901 Trans - Questions

Ok, here is my problem . . . I've got too much free play at the top (foot off) of the pedal. Have not measured it but I would estimate 1.5 - 2.0 inches. Even with this much free play the clutch still operates and the trans shifts ok.

Now here's my config . . . Just installed my new motor and rebuilt trans. The motor is a 7R case and the trans is a late 69 901 with a magnesium case (original to the car). With the original motor/trans the clutch functioned perfectly. I'm using the same flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc from my old motor. The only change to the clutch assy. has been . . .

1) Flywheel was resurfaced (within spec)
2) Pilot bearing was replaced with new
3) Release bearing was replaced new

My observations are that the release fork now has a limited range of travel before it bottoms out (hits the trans side plate). I also observed that the release fork/bearing also has what seems to be excessive free play before it touches the pressure plate. It doesn't seem like the clutch cable has streched because it worked fine in its original config.

This weekend I'm going to try to properly adjust it . . . but does anyone have an idea what is going on here?

Thanks for your comments.

Can anyone tell me what #6 for the Type 901 trans in this picture? Looks like I may have missed something here . . .

#6 are two plastic spacers that secure and center the TOB in the fork...

Stoddard Catalog describes #6 as . . .

"901-116-825-11 Holder. Fits 1965-1969, Type 901 & 902 transmission"

Could this be the cause of excessive free play if I did not install them?

Oh yeah, the TOB will just flop around until it's on the guide tube, and then the fork will flop around on the TOB...

Yup . . . I thought so. Looks like I'm pulling the motor this weekend.

Ouch

I guess we will push the drive back 'til next weekend?

Maybe my dad and I can help if we have time.

Hey Max . . . yup OUCH is exactly how I felt. But I should have checked it before. No problem. . . just think how easy it's going to be to re-torque all those nuts with the motor out and re-gap my plugs.

Anyone got a leakdown tester I can rent?

I'll get started early in the morning and have it out in a couple hours. Then wait on Stoddard for the parts . . .and back in next weekend.

Just glad I caught it before something bad happened. Amazing that it really did shift ok. I just couldn't get any fine adjustment out of it.

You and your Dad already have a busy weekend planned so lets talk next week about a new date for our drive.

Keep the beer cold for me . . . I'll be back.

Will do- hope you like Becks

I think we can work you into the schedule on Sunday, maybe even Saturday to help you with the engine drop. Would we be able to help or would we just be in the way?

I'll call you tomorrow afternoon.
