Vin Number question

I recently bought a 1970 Porsche 911S.

The number at the fuel tank matches the vin number, but the number under the radio does not match with the vin number.

Do I have a problem?

Thanks, Harold

I assume that "the number under the radio" is the stamping under the knee pad? If yes, that number is never the same as the VIN, it represents the tub that Porsche used to build the car...

I wouldn't say it never matches. It matched on the '65 I recently sold.

feel the backside of the front trunk vin with your finger to see if it's been welded in. don't "s" cars have a stamp at the base of the driver's A pillar. on my '66, 69, '72, and '73 the dash # matched the vin. but don't panic, doesn't mean they always will.

do a search, lots of vin info out there. or post on the 's' registry.

I believe the production number (written in chalk under the dash and stamped into the dash metal below the radio) actually was the same as the chassis number (VIN) until some point in 1968 or 1969. Thereafter, the numbers were different.

The VIN matches on all 3 locations on my '68.

That's what my notes say, also; and because we're talking about a '70 car... I think that I'll dig a little deeper on this one and see what I can come up with.

Harold, dont worry. The production number on your car are not supposed to match the VIN. If you send both number to Porsche in Germany they can tell you if the prod. number and VIN belong to the same car or not.
