935 Mirrors, do they work, or nuisance?
Aside from the hassle of repairing the holes in my doors from the factory flag mirrors (which may be show stopper) how do the 935 mirrors work for visability? I recall Craig 930RS mentioned problems with them.
How the heck do they mount? Are they generally lighter than flags? |

They look cool on a race car, but as far as any practicality on the street, forget about it. I had 935 race mirrors on my street-driven '69 T for 20 years and got used to looking back over my shoulder to make a lane change on the freeway. The setting of the mirrors is very limited and you have a hard time seeing cars in the next lane near to you. My wife didn't feel safe driving on the freeway with them and I eventually replaced them with small Mustang mirrors similar to the type used my some IMSA 911 race cars in the '80's.
When I got the mirrors from American International, they were supposed to be mounted with two-sided tape. I didn't trust that mounting method so I drilled two holes for each mirror through the window frame and screwed them on. Rod |

That settles that for me too.....good question. They sure look cool though don't they?

Mine is stuck on, works OK. I only have that and a rear view and a twisty neck and never feel like I am undermirrored...

I drive mine on the street all the time. They are smaller and take some getting used to, but one trick is to stick on a small round concave mirror to the passenger side mirror. (you know the ones you can get at any auto parts store for $1.00)

I have them too and expected them to be terrible - but in my opinion they are not that bad. As John said, 'I don't feel undermirrored'.
Mine are also stuck on. ![]() |

Mirrors
I have RUF mirrors on my car and they work perfectly, they are adjustable and the lenses are convex, unlike the cheaper ones available, which most likely dont work that well.

I just replaced my electric flag mirrors with Talbots.
The flag mirrors weigh 4 lbs. each and are about as aerodynamic as a brick. A 4 pound mirror? What was Porsche thinking?

Probably about a mirror that was useful.

I have the 935 mirrors with a flat mirror on the drivers side and a convex mirror on the passenger side, and stock rear view mirror. I get full coverage with no blind spots. The Vitaloni Sebring mirror uses the same lens and mounts the same inside the 935 housing.
The mirrors were on the car when I bought it. They were frozen in place, and the passenger side had a flat mirror which gave me a great view of the passenger seat. The mirrors were attached with silicone sealant. I cut through the silicone with a razor blade, spent about an hour cleaning it all off. Loosened the adjusting nut to get them functional, and replaced the passenger side with the Sebring convex mirror. Attached them with clear silicone sealant. The clear seems to set up faster and better than the black silicone. There are a few companies making the 935 mirror with a frame that attaches to the door instead of gluing them on. '79 930/DP935 |

Why not just go to the later model aero mirrors? Get the manual mirrors. They weight about 1 pound each and mount in the same holes as the flags.

My car sees little street use, far more track. Wished it were the other way around but I just never feel like driving it when I need to get somewhere and end up sitting traffic.
Appears there are more P-car nuts supporting them for a limited use car like mine, though a compromise if the car turns back to street use only. I sure like the weight saving, don't like having to fix the holes from the flags, arrrgh. Damned good pictures above! |

Are those factory parts or aftermarket and if so where?
Can the flags be converted or is there a light weight aftermarket. |

I like the earlier "Flag" style mirror from 1974. It comes in polished Aluminum/stainless steel or in black. It has a little more adjustment, reach, and area than the 935. It weighs a lot less than the power barn doors from late models.
I use my driver's side flag for almost all of my mirror needs. The windows are all Lexan so I can't see out them very well anyway. The rear view mirror isn't helped by the roll cage, either. The passenger side gets a head turn, no mirror. I feel like I can swivel my head enough but there is too much rool cage and cloudy glazing. I feel that I can get enough visual information, though, because I do not use side windows in my fiberglass doors, so I have good visibility out there to the mirror and also up front.

Mine worked fine. Both. Or maybe I can see real well. Also keep in mind that, when setting mirrors, you dont want to see your own car. Thats the area that the interior mirror covers. This recommendation might sound stupid, but I am always amazed by how many people still set their mirrors to see half their car and half the lane on either side. With the narrow range of 935 style mirrors, doing this has an effect that is a tad worse. On mine, both sides were convex since they were Ruf units. When I bought them, there was a big difference in quality between american replicas and what Ruf made. I suspect that replicas today are either molded from the Ruf mirrors or something else. The way to tell what you have is if there is to look for a notch on the underside which allows, after cutting off a piece of the lower window trim, the mirrors to be mounted without any gap at all to the doors. Most people never realized that, even though that was the proper way to mount those. Ruf also included a Wurth glue instead of two way tape. As with anything from Ruf, you get what you pay for. If Ruf no longer sells them, one can hope that whatever replica you get was copied from the proper thing.

I use them and have no issues. As Ed said, they need to be adjusted properly. Backing up is a little tricky but you get used to is. A convex mirror on the pass side is probably the best way to go. I think, for the benefit of astetics, weight reduction and reduced wind noise, you can't beat them.

I use one on the drivers side of my '77 and it works fine in conjunction with the rear view mirror.
