I have had two installers come to install my front and rear glass. The first came and just shook his head. When I asked what was wrong his english got allot worse and he left. The latest guy came early but had to get help and they would be back later. He came back alone and gave it another shot. Now his excuse is that the oem trim doesn't work with the oem seal... Their going to see if they order a chrome tubing to seal the gap.

Good question. I am afraid to take my glass out because I can easily see myself in that situation. One large local auto-glass shop refused to remove my glass after I asked about them doing it "You know it will break before it comes out" He thought I was trying to pull an insurance scam or wanting him to replace my glass for free after he broke it. "Removing and Re-installing Porsche Glass - a lost art"

The old adage that "time is money", they are too ******* lazy to take the time to do it right so they don't want to do it quick and break the glass, their better off doing insurance jobs where someone has already broken the glass for them. It will leak afterwards anyway.

i can do it by myself. no big deal. ive also watched as two glass guys pissed and moaned and couldn't do it right. finally got it in, but the trim wasn't in all the way around and they had to do it again. too funny.

Its about one of the easiest things to do on one of these cars, I would rather put in glass than adjust the valves!

I took my car to a shop to have the front replaced, the shop called a car winshield installer who broke the first one trying to install it. The owner came and installed it himself. After the shop told me the story I told them they installed the wrong windshield (no antena in the glass). I had the installer come to my work and the installed the correct glass in less than 1 hour.
He did say there was a technique to it.

If you were here in Norcal, my pops and I could do it for you. We changed the windshields on my 912e, the 87 cab, and my 84 targa.

I've done my windshield I think three times (for a variety of reasons, most recently to try and install Lexan, which I still haven't got shaped exactly right). They probably can't do it because they don't understand the function of the trim strip. Which in fact is not a "trim" strip at all.

I'm sort of in the same bind
I have not been able to find someone who can replace 911 windsheilds either.
Mine is not broken, but have some pitting due to tie. |

For anyone reading this in SoCal, call Butch at National Auto Glass in WLA. He is an expert with P-car glass and has probably replaced the windshield in at least a hundred of my customers 911s, and no fewer than four of my own cars.

Just find the local Diamond Triumph Glass. They are a national chain. I had to replace my windshield last year when I was in California. They put in a new OEM Sigla windshield with the antenna in the glass for about $500.00
http://www.diamondautoglass.com/ I was real happy with the service.

It really is not hard, just take your time and read the threads on how to do it.

I put a back glass in one time and it was a real bear. would rather pay a company and get a warranty for both. Going to give these bozos one more shot with the tubing.

Safelite. New glass installed for less than $250. They re-used my gasket but it does not leak.

I called two different Safelites but as soon as I told them it was for a '66 they bailed. Ended up doing it by myself, didn't even need a helper. Double roping did the trick for me.
