Any bad years to avoid? Thanks, Skip

Theoretically, any 915 will work. A 915 that came out of an '84-'86 car will have the notch in the housing needed to clear the speed and reference sensors, though. You may also want to get a '76 or later 915 with the electric speedo hookup. I'm not sure what axles you're using, but the output flanges on the 915 might (?) be different depending on the particular 915.

The gearing varies per application. Bill has the charts.

1977 915 for a 1986 911

I found a 1977 915 locally. Other than turning the axle flanges, draining the oil and looking at the magnet, what should I do to check it out? How do you sequence through the shifter with a pair of vice grips?

Is this a "bolt-in" for my 1986?

I did not look at it yet but I understand from this list it should have the electric speedo output. What does this look like, is it a box or is it just a connector on the housing, or?

Any compatability issues? Thanks, Skip

That year had likely still got course spline output flanges on it. This shouldn't really be a problem if you want to use large "turbo" style CV axles on it. This assumes you will be buying CV's. If you already have CV's with the car, then your bolt pattern to the flanges will be wrong and you will either need to replace the differential and output flanges on that tranny OR you will need to buy CV's. Did that make sense?

These are the sensor notches for the later Carrera bellhousings:

And this is the electronic speedo sensor on the side of the tranny:

In the 'BTDT' dept, get as late a model (84-86) as you can find so you don't have to cut out those notches yourself or swap in a different differential housing. I also found out that in '85 or '86 Porsche updated the bores in the diff housing to reduce pounding and loosening of the bearings.
