Mine always turns over once or twice before firing... Hot or cold, sitting for a week or only for a few hours, it always takes the same number of cranks. I still don't know what the delay is for. Building oil pressure? It sounds like some people don't have as much of a delay.

Mine too.

1-2 cranks, even after sitting for some time. Although, if it's sat for too long (say a few weeks), then there's a bit of oil smoke for awhile after starting.

FYI - I installed a new battery & alternator late last year.

Starts immediately when cold, a couple more turns when hot. It's something I take for granted. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I get the sense that it turns over three times from the sound of the engine or starter, rhum, rhum, rhum, start

+1, esp. 500 or so miles from home.

Was just curious sitting separated from the car because of work. I think it's somewhere around 1.5-2 seconds, just not as quick as my other car. I try not to run the starter for too long, over two seconds seems excessive for a fuel injected engine. Sometimes it takes two attempts, usually when it's still warm, IIRC.

I thought about swapping the DME relay to see if it made a difference. Is the relay a simple go/no-go item or does it start getting worse or "wear" over time?

Our Carrera cars do have one slight diffrence from other cars when starting: The fuel pump does not come on till you turn key to 'START' position. Many other EFI cars turn the pump on for about 2 seconds when the key hits 'RUN' position and this allows for fuel pressure to build up behind the injectors just prior to going into 'START' mode.

So I suspect a weak fuel pump could delay starting.

Here's something else to think about: I would preffer 3 or 4 cranks prior to startup to allow oil pressure to start to build up. So the question is: is a fast startup better or worse for the motor? I know of marine motors that have oil pressure systems that fully bring oil to all parts of the motor before startup.

I think the condition of the fuel line check valve has an effect. My car used to start instantly.. now takes maybe 2 seconds when hasn't run for a bit.

few weeks? Do you have clock, alarm, etc?

Mine starts essentially instantly when cold. It takes maybe 1 to 1.5 seconds when hot. He11, it starts faster than my 996 or Cayman do.

Have owned 3, and they've all fired right up, even cold.

kslizzy 08-21-2008 02:44 PM

Mine is also instantaneous, even after weeks of sitting. I love it!

I store my buddies 3.2, and It fires instantaneously( sp??). does seem quicker when cold, but probably only turns the motor maybe 1-2 seconds.

Steve's 3.2 starts with about 2 seconds or so of cranking. The fuel pump is new.

The 3.0 in my 81 actually starts more quickly. That little CIS engine fires almost immediately.
