Question Anti-Sub belt install

Guys,

What methods have you used to install your Ant-sub belt? Does PCA and POC accept a simple eye-bolt installed though the floor of the tub with a nice big steel backing plate underneath?

Pictures would be appreciated. My 5-point belts will be showing up next week and I'm trying to get prepared now.

That's what I did.

OK, thanks. I took a look at a buddy's car a few days ago and he had done exactly the same thing. I was just curious if it would pass tech like that. It sound like it will.

Yes, PCA accepts that. The other method is to attach it to a bar running across the rails under the seat.

I use a 6 point, so my sub has two anchor points to distribute the load. Grade 8 hardware and large steel washers on boths sides of the floor pan.

You do have a hole in the seat bottom, for the strap to go through, correct?

I use a bolt-in, rather than a clip-in connection through an eye bolt, that bolts directly through the floorboard. My thinking is - the bolt-in stress point is closer to the floor and therefore somewhat stronger and less likely to pull out. The bolt comes up from the bottom with a large washer on either side of the floorboard.

1. Follow manufacturer's advice. Some give details, like Schroth (which is what I use). They specify for the system I have, and I followed their directions.

2. Read and understand requirements of sanctioning bodies or other groups you will drive with.

3. Speak to folks in your area with PRO racing experience... this may differ from "internet racing experience."

4.

sorry...

More on 3:
One great pro I have found is Joe Marko at HMS Motorsports-- he is a good supplier/advisor (he imports and sells Schroth)

4. Inspect all belts several times each year. My sub belts rub against the seat... even though my Recaro seat has a nice grommet, this damages the sub belts to the point where they have to be replaced every so often.

Just some thoughts.

With a Carrera you'll have to move the DME out of the way.

Really? I believe my buddy's '85 Carrera still has the DME in the stock location. I may be wrong though. I ask him.

That's why the Cup cars which all come oem w/ 5 pt harnesses have the DME behind the seat. If the DME is in the stock location the sub is often bolted to the seat or a sub bar

Relocating the DME and drilling one or two anchor holes thru the floor is why I am reluctant to make this change. Does the sub bar you mention bolt in or weld in between the seat rails? I think Brey Kraus makes a sub bar for 996 and later 911, but not 3.2 liter and earlier.

The other "PCA Approved" option is Tuner type Recaro Speed S seats fitted with Schroth four point ASM harness.

I just texted my buddy and he said he didn't have to move his DME on his '85. You know, last weekend I looked at the setup he has and it looks stout, but for the life of me I can't remember how close the eye bolt is to his DME. If I had my car with me (I don't right now), I'd look at the setup and try to see if it would have enough room. I think I'll do a search for DME install pictures so I can see exactly where it sits relative to the seat.

Milt...Ha Ha. (why didn't I think of that?)

I've got the eyebolt/backing plate setup. No problem at all clearing the DME.....

The floor pan is very thin. I wouldn't go to that. Sure, it's easy and it passes tech but really you should mount it to a cross bar spanning the seat rails because that will tie it to the center tunnel and the side sill, two very strong parts of the car. Go to Home Depot and buy a piece of tubing that's strong enough, flatten the ends and bolt it to the underside of the factory rails (underside so it doesn't lift the seat).

We did this in my brothers '84 and it worked great. In my car I have a welded in substructure that replaces that factory rails entirely and provides an 1/8" layer of steel between me and the floor pan.

That's partly why I use a 6 point. No need to move the electronics.
