Question SSIs thin or thick

I have an 3.0 82 SC And I am going to buy a set of SSIs that are thin flange. I don't know if they will fit? will someone please tell me if they will before I buy them. And what the difference is. Thanks a lot Jake

But you can still use them if you are willing to either replace the exhaust studs with shorter studs or stack some washers to take up the extra length of the studs on your car.

The thick-flange SSIs come with the oxygen sensor bung built-in. The thin-flange ones don't have this. If you want to continue using the lambda system on your 83, you'll want to have that bung.

Uh ... I have thin flanges with the 02 sensor on an 82SC.

Regarding the thick v. thin ... depends on the exhaust studs as mentioned above.

I installed all new studs that would work with the thin flange b/c the PO had a mix and match of various sized exhaust studs. When I pulled the exhuast of nearly all of the studs pulled out too. So I took the opportunity to replace them.

yes, you can also change the exhaust studs out, then use either thick or thin.

I run with the 02 sensor disconnected. It runs way better in my opinion. I simply put the 02 sensor in the bung on the SSIs - but I cut the wire that runs from the sensor through the engine sheet metal.

w/o the O sensor hooked up the engine reverts to an open loop mode. aka 'limp home'

the car will run well but get worse mileage and of course pollute more.

Yep , thin flange will definately work, and you can just use some extra washers, or spacers to avoid changing the studs, ( sometimes they are pretty scary looking) . This makes the install a little more of a pia, but not that bad.

my factory thermal reactor exhaust was thick flange.

then when I called SSI they told me to measure the thickness of the thermal reactor flange because it may also be a thin flanged thermal reactor.

anyway.. I bought thick SSI with the O2 hole, an extra probe mount in case I want to run the LM-1 on both collectors for $12, and one cap.

I had a pair of thin flange early 74 steel exhaust and they were OK but they didn't have the raised port flange that the SSI thick flange had as shown in the pics. IMHO the raised port is enough reason to go with thick flange to reduce the chances of gasket failure and eaiser to install. Does SSI make a thin flange with the raised flanges? My car is an 82 YMMV

I have a set of thin flange with O2 bung. They have no raised port. They are waiting to go on my '83 SC once my M&K sport muffler arrives.

Tim, looks like you have the same SSI/sport muffler set up. Do you have it on the car yet and if so how does it sound?

Cheers, John
