WUR, trying to get to screen 82 SC
I'm dealing with my car not starting, I'm trying to get to the screen on the WUR that occasionally needs cleaning. I've removed the line that goes to the center of the fuel distributor, and I'm left with the fitting on the WUR.
Since I see no screen here I assume (dangerous) that I need to remove the fitting. It is VERY tight, and I'm nervous about putting any more force on it until I get some input from the experts. Below is a photo with the fitting. ![]()

wur screen cleaning
you and I are having exactly the same amount of fun. If you can get that fitting off while its on the car the screen is about 1/2" below the fitting. Try soaking it and blow it off with compressed air. I got a can of air at Staples for my computer, its great for little projects if you dont have a air compressor. If that doesnt work, and it didnt for me, your going to have to remove the other line, soak it with carb cleaner or PB NUT Blaster ( my favorite) and blow it out from the other side. You will find a small hole on the other port that a spray can straw fits perfectly. Now that you have the electrical connection off, check the resistance too. Wear safety glasses so you dont get blow back to the face!!!!!!!!!!!! I assume you have the pressure gauge test kit. Let me know how it goes. I am doing the same trouble shooting to my 81 911 sc

Thanks, actually I think I got this idea from your thread.
My probelm is the car will not start. Turns over and then back fires through the pop off. No I don't have the pressure test kit yet. Keep me posted on your results. Jay

wur
we both have the same problems, mine wont start either. Im putting my wur back in saturday now that ive had it apart and cleaned it. Ill be adjusting the pressure. I would highly recommend you get the fuel pressure cis-k test kit from JC Whitney. For some reason if you order on a monday they have free shipping, go figure.

wur cleaning
I took my wur off the car and apart, there are two contacts that look like old points from a distributor as part of the bimetal switch, i shot those with PB nut blaster, the screen was cleaned and blow out, i also spred some vasiline on the gasket before i put the two halfs back together on the body of the wur just to make sure theres no vacuum leak. After i reinstalled the wur i got 35psi control pressure and 70 primary. My resistance is still 9.9 ohms and the control pressure will increase to 55 psi in 60 seconds. Of course this did not help start the car, but it needed cleaning. I knocked that plug down by tapping a bolt with a small hammer and watching the control pressure,(connector off) and tried starting the car at 35, 32, 28 25, 20 psi control pressure, no luck.

I have an 82sc. I have had three major times when I had serious backfires that popped my pop-off valve. Once I reversed two ignition wires when changing the rotor, oops. Another time I had a torn intake manifold gasket. And the other time was when my CDI unit went out. I have cleaned my wur and adjusted my pressures in the past, this has helped with reducing smoke at warm up, proper idle speeds, but no change in drivability for me. Hope this helps.

If you search my name and WUR you will find I recently had similar problems. Even @ 12C my engine wouldn't start up unless my cold cp was about 13 lb (.9 bar) w/ the connection unplugged.
Also, make sure your mixture is correct. If you raise the sensor plate while cranking does the engine fire?

Well here's my update, not really sure if the problem is better or worse!
I did take the fitting out and clean the screen the best I could, and put all that back together. I had previously replaced the "green coax" which included splicing in a new connector, and replacing the distributor cap and rotor. Putting the distributor back in was more troublesome than I thought it would be. But finally got it in correctly. Replaced the spark plugs (they looked ok but did have 15K miles on them). And low and behold the car started up just fine, no problems. So I shut it off so I could put back all the heater hoses and the blower etc. Started it up again, set the timing per Wayne's book.... drove around the alley VERY close to the hose at low speed, after less the 5 minutes the car dies! Pushed it back in to the garage. And wasn't until Sunday that I had time to mess with it. Yep it starts right up! Didn't have that much time so shut it off. So what could be happening "warm" fuel pressure problems? Is the accumulator failing? Thoughts?

similiar problems
You really need the pressure test kit to know for sure if its the warm up regulator, i doubt the accumulator would cause it to die, the accumulator could cause it to be very hard to start warm. but again, the pressure test kit will verify all this. Its worth the 60-80 bucks before you start spending several hundred on remove and replace.
Im thinking failing CID, on mine and probably yours. Keep me posted since my 1981 is similiar to yours. |

I'm afraid you are correct on the failing CDI, was hoping to avoid that.
