911 SC factory options
Hello,
I need an answer to what wheels were available as an option on the SC. Reason: the Parade Competition Rules (PCR's) limit production class 8 to one inch bigger then supplied by factory, which per there rules (which is based on the owner's manual) were 6's and 7's by 15 or 16. I have an original Porsche sales brochure from 1982, and on page seven it indiates that stock were 6's and 7's x 15 cast alloy, but an option was 7's and 8 x 16 forged. I also have a parts diagram from Porsche (courtesy of Adrian Streather) for the SC that indicates 7 and 8 x 15 were available as well as 7 and 8 x 16. There is some nebulosity as to whether that was only for the Turbo, though. Does anyone have a window sticker or some other definitive documentation that proves or disproves that 7 and 8 x 15 or 16's were avialable as a FACTORY (not dealer add on) for the SC? Thanks Scott MacKie |

I am the original owner of my 81 SC. Standard wheels were 6 and 7 x15. The only option was 6 and 7 x16 which I ordered. I believe I have the window sticker somewhere.

Yes, but
That doesn't jibe with the sales literature or the Porsche parts diagram I have, which I why I'm scratching my head.
At issue is what the PCA PCR's define as factory equipment, because that can have a huge effect on what class one runs in. sbm |

Here is a scan I took from a factory sales brochure from 1979. It shows the standard 15" and the optional 16" fuchs. I looked thru the other road test books I have and only see 6/7x16 for SC's. The 8" rears came on the early turbos. My 80 came with optional 6/7x16 fuchs as per the COA.

I have a '79 SC and I just checked the gold sticker under the bonnet. It has listed tire pressures for:
front: 205/55 VR 16 rear: 225/50 VR 16 I take it this means 7x8x16" wheels. I'd take a picture, but my camera has no charge right now, if you'd like I can take one for you tomorrow.

As an extra bit of data about my car, it's a widebody conversion, not a turbo (and it was not converted at the factory or anything), so I'm not sure then why I would have that label under the bonnet, unless maybe the upgrade was done by a dealer and they put the label there when the other wheels were put on.

I believe that one of the early road and track articles refer to the 7 and 8 X 16's being available as part of a Sports package that were on the cars they tested. I'll try to confirm when I get back to the library (porcelain throne).

You can include 1981 in that list.

Bill,
Your post would jibe with the parts diagram Adrian Streather sent me. Couldn't decifer what the m439 packge was (which offered the 8's in a 15 inch rim). I called PCNA and asked them. Got a call back from a person in the authenticity department. There response was on the order of "we don't keep those records; we'd reference sales literature." BINGO, thinks me. So, I ask if they'll send me an email to that effect. "Wait, let me ask...Sorry, no." Not much help there. If the PCR committee will except the orginal sales literature, SC owners of the world have a chance. If not, it was a worthy fight, and I will relent and find some 8's. Maybe trade the 9's plus cash for some street presentable 8's? Or just buy a set of track wheels. Which is what I should do if I wasn't so lazy. Scott not giving up the fight just yet. |

The Ferry Porsche edition offered 7 and 8x 15 (1982?)
The Red Book lists 6 and 7 for everyday 911SC ( v. the Turbo) models with stock 15 and option for 16 The 1982 Porsche Audi fact book (pub by Porsche/audi) lists 6 and 7/15 as stock 6 and 7x16 as an option ...........Which is consistent with the Porsche pdf catalog. But....the catalog does list the 7 and 8x16 after the turbo but without a model assigned Other sales literature I have supports the 6 and 7 x16 info Best of luck sorting this out !

Scott,
Bill V. nailed it. Apart from special cars like the Weissach edition, the only optional wheels were 6 and 7 by 16. But, since a Weissach edition was available to anybody with a pulse and a checkbook, you have your answer. The brochures have errors in them from time to time, so they aren't the best source of information. Other material was available to the dealers but it sometimes wasn't very specific. Of course, if there was only one option code for different wheels and you wrote that code in on the order sheet, it was pretty obvious what you got when the car arrived. Which would have been what Bill suggested. JR |
