1972T project

just finished painting and starting to wet sand.



doors are sanded with 2500 wet and dry, after hood and body is sanded I will go over with 3000 wet and dry and after that I will try my luck in cut polishing.
Never done it before.
Expirience gained is proportional of equipment ruined.
If I ruin it, there is aleays more paint and sanding.

Did you paint it with all the panels in place? Or with them all off and then reassembled for sanding?

Oh and did you paint it at home?

Robert, since my garage was to dusty and to cramped, Erik took the car over to Ken and we painted it in his brand new CLEAN garage. Than Erik delivered it back to me.

We painted the panels off the car and sanding is done the panels laying on saw horses. The final polish will be don all assembled.

come over and inspect. It's only 1/2 hr from your place.

Looks good Fritz. I assume you have a DA sander/buffer to help out with the polishing? Are you planning to put a few coats of clear over it all? What color is that...I might need to see that in person. I'm not having much luck deciding on colors for my '72.

Josh, any time come out and inspect and be a critique , but come before the white stuff comes down from the sky
It has 3 layers of clear cote and the color is Steve McQueen gray
Glasurit slate gray #7794
Porsche code 6601

Yes I have a power polisher and it will get used.

just a driver with the odd DE or AX. I like the open road and a bit of spirited driving.
I am out in the country with some nice long stretches.

I am in Calgary restoring a '71 E, and am in the final paint/clear coat stage too. This is my first time doing this, so I might need some tips. I would like to come see the car, if you wouldn't mind, just to see how crappy my priming has been.

Was your priming a little textured? Mine is slightly rough. I'm wondering if this is normal and the paint will smooth it out?

The paint won't smooth out rough primer. You have to sand it to get it nice and smooth. Putting paint over a rough primer will only make for rough looking paint.

Check out this thread for some good hints on priming and sanding:

Bondo Work And Primer Application 101

You'll want to start with a 220 grit and go to a 400. Don't go any finer or it won't give a good surface for the paint to adhere. Wet sanding is the way to go. The primer will clog the sandpaper pretty fast if you don't use water.

both forums have great ideas.

experience gained is proportional to equipment ruined. and I am ruining a lot's of equipment/paint jobs at that moment. I sanded twice through the clear cote and paint.

there is some kind of "finish" primer to use over regular primer - the guy who did my car used it

you are gonna need to guide coat it/sand/ paint - many many times to get it it perfect

just a few quick rough steps.

1) get metal as s fair and smooth as possible
2) use high quality filler
3) keep sanding and filling, till you can't feel any high and low
4) spray guide cote and sand again, that step might take 2 or 3 or more tries
5) spray complete car with epoxy primer
6) spray car with high quality high built primer
7) sand and again use guide cote
8) after that is finished, spray another epoxy primer
9) spray color
10)spray at least 3 cotes of clear cote
11) color sand
12polish

If you should be so lucky and screw up, you might as well go one step back redo the screw up and than go ahead. Since my finished cote hase to mauch orange peel, I am at the final sanding stage.
