I Am One Again - Our New 911

Hello again! It's an exciting time in the world of Doug&Julie as yesterday we picked up a new-to-us 1974 911 coupe. Now, for some of you who know us, this wasn't really in the cards as Julie and I emptied our Porsche stable last fall with intent to save as much $$$ as possible to help us move to the PNW (Hello Portland!) this year after Julie graduates in May. Unfortunately, the housing market isn't helping us one bit, not to mention the timing of a few other things, so we decided to put off the move for one more year. (Dammit.) However, as part consolation, Julie and I decided we would look for a "cheap" Porsche to enjoy for at least this year. I was really hoping for a 911 but wanted to keep our budget to around $10k or less, which we're finding harder and harder to do. Then our luck changed. I got an e-mail from "Pat S", who purchased my Boxster from me last year. I remember he came down in his 911, which I fell in love with of course, and told him at the time to let me know if he ever decided to sell it. It turns out he and his wife are moving he can't take both Porsches with him. So, to make a long story shor...er, not as long, he made an offer we couldn't refuse. (For the record, we did not get this car for our $10k budget, but we stretched it because this is such a good car.)

So what we've ended up with is this sweet little 911, originally Gulf Blue but repainted Guards red at some point in it's life, with rebuilt stock power but lots of other goodies...too many to list really. It drives extremely well and feels solid. Pat did a great job building (and rebuilding) it over the past few years, so not only am I thankful for getting a car from such an enthusiast, I recognize my responsibility to keep this car in as good a shape as possible!

My plans are to...well...to do nothing to it. I have dreams of backdating it, which may happen someday, but really the only thing I want to do right now is just drive it and enjoy it! Hey, that's what it's all about, right?!?

Here are some pics...I'll be sure to post more as I get to know the car better over the next few days/weeks/months. Until then...happy motoring!

Congrats Doug!! What a sweet little middie! I hope to join you in midyear madness before too long.

I love the stance of that car - it's sitting at a lovely ride height. I believe this is your first mid year car, so tell us about "stock" 2.7 power . Is it going to be adequate for you?

All you need to do now is drive it out to Washington. Pretty car; you'll have to join us at the XXX again with it some day.

Thanks Matt! I might make a trip up Nort in the new car...if so we'll be sure to stop by and say hey. It's not exactly quiet, so I'm not sure how easily we'll be able to handle five hours in it. But we'll probably try at least once.

The power in this car is perfectly fine for me. You know I'm not a power monger, but even so there's plenty of power to give a nice rush! These cars are not that much heavier than the early cars, so they don't need a lot of power to have fun.

Pat did a great job with the car...made a lot of decisions I completely agree with, like the ride height you mentioned. Nice and low, but not too low. The car has a nice firm ride, but not too jarring, so very livable. I'm seeing a lot of time behind the wheel this year.

Thanks, we're hoping we'll be able to keep it when we move next year. I'm mentally preparing myself to have to sell this, if only because next year moving will happen, and if we need extra money to help with that, I won't hesitate to make the sacrifice. But at the same time, being a 911 coupe in such good condition, I'd love to keep this one for a long time...that's the goal anyway.

Have Scooter drive it out for you, like he did the last one. This time, don't sell it to him first.

I have dreams of backdating it,
you know this would be a nice one to do a 911R or RS clone if you want to do the rear fenders. It would look great with the chrome trim ! but for now have fun just driving it

Cheers,

Ed

Congrats!

I hope the "cop attractant" red works out...

Be sure to keep your eye on Portland housing prices -- they are NOT cheap (except maybe in comparison to SFO, etc. ...

Congrats Doug. IMHO too bad about the color change. Gulf Blue is a really cool color. Enjoy that car as is and don't back date it!

Nice move.

We always think about tommorrow, what we would do, and what is to come, but all we ever really have is this moment.

The car is perfect. Do not feel you have to do anything but drive it and keep it up. I feel a great spring is coming. Get out there and have fun with both your dolls.

I remember when Pat bought that car. I went and looked at a ratty SC with him when he was first starting to look at 911's.

It is good to see you back in another Porsche, even if it is for a short time.

Beautiful car! I love the PORSCHE side scriptand the ducktail. Are those H1 headlights? I think you will really like the 74. Good power and still very light.

Hey Doug:

You gonna make a video of the new car and post it on YouTube? Any plans to visit the PNW again before the big move?

Cheers,

Paul.
