Question about my first valve adjustment job..

I am doing my first valve adjustment on a 74 (non S). Followed Wayne's book up to this point. Just wanted guidance before I commit a big boo boo.

1) got pulley to Z1.

2) took out the dist. cap and apparently it is different from the SC from Wayne's book. I don't think my dist. is pointing at the notch. What now? Does this explain why I am having to completely back out my adjustment screw? I started with #1 exhaust valve and was able to slide the gauge, but when I got to the intake valve, the gauge was only able to go halfway through the valve clearance (despite having to back out the adjustment screw quite a bit). Is this normal?

Thanks.

Try rotating the engine another 360 degrees. I think that the engine rotates twice for each one rotation of the distributor (4 stroke). Turn the pully on the fan through another 360 and it should be back to the mark...

Thanks for the advice, T77911s and tedder. I will do that right now.

T77911S, POOR-SH was the exact message I was trying to convey. These things will make you poor one of these days.
