At first I thought it was an EGR light, but that would be between the tach & speedo, and 88 Carreras (based on sig) did not have EGR. So, sorry - no help.

Oxygen sensor. Every 20K (or 30K?) miles, it automatically turns on. If you still have an O2 sensor, it might need to checked out. There is a small reset button on the back of the speedo near the odometer that will reset the light for 20K more miles.

EDIT: At least for an SC...I assume a Carrera is the same...

I thought the newer-than-mine cars had temp gauges that read in degrees instead of the blank bars?

This was posted before, it is an "Emission Control" EX light connected to your O2 Sensor

According to PAG those were installed on exports to Japan indicated by "J"? Is that right?

it's not an export. i will check the o2 sensor reset. if this isn't it, the PO had some kind of funky alarm installed which i removed. thanks.

Posting the year/type would help a lot to avoid guessing.
Yes on the OX sensor light.
Or oil dip stick is missing?
Ash tray open?
But, it could also be a warning that the ejection seat is primed.

I was going to say the same thing since my 88 doesn't have that light.

That light, between the tach and the oil temp and pressure gauge, on a 1988 cabriolet, is the Cabrio Top Warning Light. The O2 sensor light, used up to 83, would have been between the speedo and the tach. Tony.

No, earlier cars have "real" (numbered) temperature gauges and oil pressure gauges that read to 140 PSI.

Thanks for correcting me . I couldn't remember if the OSX light was just to the right or left of the tach, and (strangely) my car wasn't sitting in my lap when I posted

yep, didn't notice your car is a cab. I had an 88 cab, too. that is correct. Yours is missing the red lens, though.
