'78 930 with non-floating front rotors?
I am not crystal clear on all the different versions of brakes that were offered on 930s from '76 to '89 but I was quite sure that a '78 ROW car should have floating (2 piece) front rotors. Take a look at these pics and please help me out. These are obviously one-piece non-floating front rotors. Are these rotors a direct replacement for the floating rotors?
Thanks ![]() Last edited by Ringmaster; 01-27-2009 at 06:38 PM.. |

Don't know about the calipers, but it looks like the p.o. either lost or damaged the grease cap and that was his solution. Looks like you would thread a bolt into the cap to have leverage to remove it.

I think your 78 floating rotors were installed on my 87 930 by a previous owner j/k
![]() Trust me, the cost of 2 piece rotors are insane! Ask me how I know? You are correct, you should have floating rotors on that car. To go back to 2-piece rotors, you will need to find: Dog eared hats, rotors and new hubs. The welding on the hub center cap is standard for 1 piece rotors from the factory If you’re looking for 1 piece front rotors, PM me as I bought a set by accident a while back. Here is what my back dated 930 front braking looks like. ![]()

If you wanted the lighter 2-piece ones, you would need a pair of 911 hubs, front 930 wheel spacers, and a pair of early 930 rotor/hat assemblies. One can use the early full-floating ones (very expensive) or one of several aftermarket 2-piece rotor/hat options; some of which are VERY good.

There was a TSB that was issued in '80 with regard to that, so most 930s that were dealer serviced and need new fronts would have gotten the treatment that yours has gotten.
Unless you are racing there is nothing really bad about that set up.

![]() They have been VERY durable in all of our race cars over the past 6 years. All you will need is the rotors, not the hats.

For a street and track combo 930 my guess is the floating rotors don't offer much real world measurable benefit. If I could buy nice 2pc front discs to work with my current (incorrect) hubs for under $400ea I would do it, otherwise I will say with the '80> 1pc discs.

You'll not find any decent 2-piece rotor/hat assemblies for that kind of money although ours (flat-hat style) are close.
My best advice would be to retain what you have due to reasonable cost unless you need lowest possible unsprung weight. ![]()
