Time to fix the heater

Well fall is here, and the weather is great for a while. I am now planning on getting the heater in working order for the colder months. The PO had it checked and decided not to spend the money, since he only drove it in nice weather. I have read over past threads, and determined I have the auto system, since it has the dial with 9 settings and no lever. The mechanic diagnosis was " The linkage rod that controls the temp is broken. Both R and L aux heater fans are bad." I was trying to figure what to order, from our host if possible, but not sure as this is my first P-car. Waynes book only goes into so much detail as well. Are the aux heater fans located in the engine compartment?, and does anyone know the part number for the linkage rod. I see a lot of levers and cables, but not sure I see what I need. Thanks for the help, and if there is a previous post that covers this, please feel free to post the link. I try not to ask a question without at least looking for it with a search.

Cheers,
Emerald

Sorry about that. Yes, it is an 88 coupe. I assume L & R will be in the foot wells correct?
Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
Emerald

I just went through my heating system and this stuff is fresh in my mind. There is a lot of information on this topic here at Pelican. First make sure your engine compartment blower is working. Check the fuses under the cover on the driver side of the engine compartment. I had to replace this blower. If it is not working, the footwell blowers will not work either. If one or both of the footwell blowers are not working or noisy once you confirm that the rear blower is working, they will have to be repaired or replaced.

The rod between the servo motor and the linkage to the rear flaps is in the center console where the temperature control is. A common failure is for this rod to come off at one end. There is a ball and socket connection and the plastic socket on the rod can fail. There is a new improved part that can be purchased from our host. PN is 999-168-021-40. Replace both ends. Getting at this rod is a pain. You can confirm that it not connected by removing the small access panel on the passenger side of the console and reaching in. It is best to remove the passenger seat then the console to actually do the repair.

This is a complex system and there are other things that can fail but this should give you a start. Good luck.

Thanks,

I feel like I have a great start. Thanks for the part number for the linkage. I will have to get in there and sort things out.

Cheer,
Emerald

Just to eliminate possible confusion, the rod is reused. The plastic socket at each end of the rod gets replaced. That is the part number I gave.

The footwell blowers arn"t really needed in my opinion. Mine have never worked since owning the car. Sufficient heat can be obtained from the rear motor blower assuming normal driving in the spring and fall.

Well it turns out the foot well blowers need to be replaced. They scream when powered.
Where is the best place to pick these up? I did not see them from our host.
Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
Emerald

i am in the middle of refurbishing my heat/fresh air. my fresh air blower died and have 0 budget right now, when i do i'll replace the entire front housing.
so in the meantime i have succesfully retro fitted a larger honda blower with the porsche fan.
i plan on buttoning it up this weekend then start on the footwells and re-install my rear blower, a thread on the retro fit will be posted when i take pics, it's moving massive amounts of fresh air
