Lightweight Interior firewall sound/heat pad
Bob at APPBIZ here
Per numerous customer requests we have begun production of a lightweight interior firewall sound pad. This unit replaces the heavy asphalt/felt unit that lays under the parcel shelf area and hangs behind the rear seat backs. The OEM one that we used as a pattern weighs in at well over 10 lbs, our new lightweight replacement hits the scale at 2lbs. and should do a pretty efective job of knocking down sound and a terrific job reducing heat. The main pad is die cut from our Double foil reinforced felt and and second piece of heavier felt is die cut and attached. Just like the factory, but using more modern materials ![]() Back (Firewall side) ![]() Front (Cabin/Carpet side) As always we welcome your questions and comments. Our Sugested retail price on this is $89 Tell your Pelican parts rep that this product comes from APPBIZ (Applied Business Concepts) and our internal part number ISP-L It has perforations to remove small areas of material on the sides for use in Targas. So it is applicable to 911/912s from 1965 to 1989 Coupe or Targa models We are also using the same dies to cut the heavied OEM style replacement. Pics of that pad will be added to this post shortly. Thank you all for your past support and patronage! Bob Last edited by appbiz; 08-15-2008 at 12:30 PM.. |

Hey Bob,
The heavy original sound pad under the parcel shelf and behind the back seat looks like it is difficult to easily remove. It looks like it has ten pound of glue on it. How easy is it to remove? Any clues about how to go about it? Also, what is the cost? Thank you for your time. Cordially, Greg

Greg that one comes off pretty easily, really not much glue, Gravity pretty much keeps it there and what little glue there is it Felt to steel, so it should pull off pretty much intact. You will need to do a little cleanup. But the factory used just a few stripes of glue if any to hold them down in most cases.

Thanks Bob. I didn't want to get into a big messy job. What is the projected cost?
Cordially, Greg

Our suggested list price is set at $89
Pelican discounts some of my parts after a period of time. Bob |

Bob, do you know how different the 911 version would be from 964 or 993 versions?

Bill it will likely fit just fine, but I haven't got a C2 or 993 here to lay it into, so I hessitate to certify it will fit.

Bill
Look in your local yellow pages/Web for an automotive trim supply (This is the place where the local uphostrey shops get their materials) and swing by with a sample of the material you are trying to match. The will generally be able to find you something close. Bob |

Thanks!, yes, I saw that, visually I like the plain ones better but concede that the pockets might be useful. Have to think about that.

I am actually tearing apart my 87 Carrera right now. That rear panel was by far the easiest things in the car to remove. It would take a below mechanical average person to complete this job in less than 1 hour, with no fuss...no muss. I will actually post the install of this brand new piece in a couple of weeks right here on Pelican. I just have to get my car back from the body shop and it is killing me!! Bob - I'm glad you're adding to your line up.
Do have any data on the sound isolation or heat insulation of the pad? If not, do youh ave such data for the underlying material (the felt)? |

I'll do a sound check when I put it in. I can idle, and run car with and without.

How much lighter is your RSA carpet kit than stock 964 carpet?

I recently removed both the actual "pad" plus the lower one that lies in the seat and down to the floor of the car. The lower one actually weighted more. The total was 12.2 kg!
I was very happy until I started the car and went for a ride... what a noisy car it had become! Very noisy in fact. Ok in a steady cruise, horrendous in the midrange and simply beatiful over 4000 revs. But much too noisy...So now I am searching for some light weight sound-insulation mats or something to get the noise back to somewhat OE-levels... The heavy OE "pads" are not going back in! I appreciate some input here! Great to see that there is someone manufacturing new leighweight pads. Even if it seems to me that the upper pad doesen't need as much silencing as the lower one. Driving without the upper pad seemed to give more induction noise, while driving without the lower pad made for a whole orchestra of racket! - In my view at least. Seems like Porsche did a good job with the silencing in the first place!

My sound pads were not nearly so easy to remove, including glue. Worth it, certainly. But not the slightest bit easy.

What do others use to substitute this with a lightweight alternative. Or do they just love the noise?
