Cat - What is this screw for ?
So I had to put the cat back on the car (now required for inspection every year, sigh). The exhaust had gained an annoying whistle, and on inspection, I noticed that there seems to be a bolt missing from this hole in the cat (before the core). The pic is of another cat btw.
So, the questions are; 1. What size/type of bolt can I stick in here to plug it (nothing I have on hand seems to fit) 2. What the heck is this bolt here for?

For attaching the heat shield, maybe?
Remember those threads are metric. Either take it down to the local hardware store and trial fit until you find one or find one close and rethread it using a socket wrench on the bolt.

That's the test bung, hence why it's in front of the core.

You remove it and install a CO reader for testing purpose. It is so rusted now it will just snaps off if you even breath on it.

Any idea what size it is? a 1/4" bolt slides in easily so I am guessing 7-9mm. Should i worry about what kind of metal I use for the bolt I stick in there? I don't like the idea of exhaust pointing straight at the tire (plus the whistle is annoying)

If a 1/4" bolt goes inside it is likely M8. And it probably needs re-tapping. Then put in a stainless steel bolt with anti-seize.

As I remember from somewhere it is the same thread as a spark plug. I may be thinking of the O2 sensor.
