Help: Where does this part go and how is it secured?
I finally got my 89 911 Cab back from the body shop after 3 months! Lesson: never get too close behind a Japanese tourist who doesn't know how to drive - because chances are that he is going to back into you! But that's another story. I picked up the car after dark so there may be other issues but these two were obvious.
Problem 1: First, when I turn on the running lights (yellow side lights) the light that typically flashes for right turns (pass sid) is also on (not flashing). It still blinks when you activate it. Driver side works fine. Only running light comes on, etc. Any ideas if this is normal or what is crossed. The lights are plug and play so I am not sure what is going on. I never really checked this before so I don't know what is right or wrong. Ideas? Problem 2: Something was rattling up front and when I checked I found what I suspect is the windshield washer pump just sitting loose under the trunk carpet! I have no idea where it actually goes and how it is secured. It has rubber nipples on the back so I am sure it is fastened somewhere. Any help appreciated. ![]() Last edited by ajmarton; 10-31-2008 at 07:12 PM.. |

#2, yes its your windshield washer pump. Pull the carpet back, it mounts to the side of the washer tank, or to the bottom/front side of the front pan (depending on the year).

Question #2, windshield pump. Pull carpet back as rattlesnak says, there are 3 holes for mounting. I installed mine easily with bumper off by pulling the rubber "tits" through the sheet metal behind the front bumper. You may be able to lube the rubber with soap or rubber lube and push them through the holes, but I doubt it will work. Did you have the bumper off when car was painted? There really is no reason to pull the pump out of the mounting holes unless the sheet metal behind the bumper was damages as I suspect it was. I painted my car and had the bumpers off, so putting the pump back was no big deal. It is when the bumper is on...Good luck..

The pump can be put back on from the inside. IIRC, there are slots on the pump so you can put the rubber bits back and then cajole the pump onto them. Ken

The reason your pump is laying there is probably some or all of the three rubber "tits" are AWOL. Don't re-mount with small bolts as I did. It needs to be mounted in rubber to damp the pump vibration. The rubber things are cheap and available from our host.

Agreed, it looks like they're ripped off, which means the body shop got a bit antsy when they couldn't figure out how to remove it from the sheet metal, so they pulled harder...

If it's anything like an '86 the access to pull the nipples through the sheet metal is terrible and it can be virtually impossible to get all three through. The body shop no-doubt charged thousands of dollars to fix your car. I'd take the problem to them. They need to fix your lights, anyway, so they're not near done. Reputable places around here want happy customers telling their friends how wonderful the coffee is in the waiting room, not explaining the funny noise and why when you step on the brake the sunroof opens.

I checked this morning. There is only one nipple to worry about and the other two lower rubber ones act as bumpers against the body wall. Also, anyone know what goes in the hole next to the pump - is there a rubber plug or something? I took a picture - it is basically located on the front inner wall of the trunk across from the battery. The washer pump is installed next to it as there is a smaller hole (you can see some of the faint white water stain from some fuild loss over the years). TIA Andrew

yes, a rubber or plastic plug goes there. Its the access hole to the bumper bolts.

I believe you will find that to properly mount the pump you will need need three of the identical rubber thingys. I can't recall exactly, and I could be wrong, but I believe you can insert the rubber thingys in the three holes in the car body, and then hang the pump on them. A little silicone spray may help with the insert.
If you have to pull them through from the front, it's a major PITA unless you've got a skinny, triple-jointed forearm. The blood however, will be in a location not readily visible to people on the street. Kudos for chasing this little stuff to get the car right! |

I think you are right. I ordered the 3 rubber mounts. Two on the bottom were probably torn off at some point in the past so they looked like feet but I found the lower 2 holes. The body shop said they will install it but I will give it a shot when they arrive. I think I will try to soften up the rubber by putting them in hot water and then lubricating them. Hopefully it won't be too painful. I also changed the seal between the door and the side view mirror - that is enough to make a grown man cry.
