86 911 shifting issue
Started my car the other day and couldn't get it to go into any gear and was getting a buzz when I tried. Eventually I got it in gear and it shifted normally rest of the drive. Was driving the other day and same thing happened. Any thoughts on what to check? Is my clutch going or maybe needs adjustment? 107k miles, morganatic clutch I believe, but it catches and shifts well other than this issue that just started.
Thx

Check all of the shifter associated bushings to start. Replace as needed. If you think they are originals change them out. You also should look into adjusting your shifter coupler that's between the rear seats.
While it COULD be a clutch issue, it's wise to start with the simple items first.

Shifter bushings and coupler are new, replaced within the last year.

ok.I would suggest checking the clutch cable in that case. Where does the pedal engage?
Do you get any slipping of the clutch when in 5th gear and accelerate? It can be a DIY test of clutch wear. Checking the coupler would still be a good idea. It may need adjustment.

Thanks. Clutch engages as it always has, feels normal, no slipping. I do notice that at times I have to press the clutch all the way in to shift, perhaps that means an adjustment is needed or the cable is getting stretched.
the clutch tends to catch fairly low, but it always felt like it was strong, still does except for this new development. If it were the coupler in the tunnel, would think it would be a persistent issue, same for bushing under shifter. The only time it has happened as been at rest, not while driving. Try adjusting the clutch cable.
Most prefer to have engagement about halfway up but you can tailor to your preference. I would read up on how to do the adjustment here before starting if you've never done it. Please post your findings.

Also check the fork in the inspection hole on top of the gear box as a helper presses the clutch. Put you hand there and make sure fork is moving as it should.

I just had a simular issue. Check that the cone shaped set screw behind the coupler has not come loose in the shift coupling compartment (under the carpet in front of the rear seats). While in there check that the cover is not jammed and impeding your shifts. Hopefully something simple

Tunnel looks fine, cone screw is there and tight, nothing else unusual there. Have to figure out clutch adjustment and checking it.

Check the lower inspection cover. The fork that is bolted/nutted to the inside of the cover comes loose and can make the "mapping" of the shift rods difficult
