Motor oil, syn/conv?

Hi guys, new comer to a 1987 3.2 Targa. New sw chip, KN drop in filter, straight pipe into a Bursch muffler. Runs good, about to do my oil change. Do you suggest mobil one or a conventional oil, and if so what type and grade. Keep in mind I live in florida. Engine was completely rebuilt 4 years ago.

Do a search. There is a 40 odd page thread on this if you want to get all the details.

The coles notes version for your car is this:

Delo 400 synthetic or Brad Penn in the engine.
Swepco 201 in the trans.

Brad Penn in the engine/Swepco 201 in the trans.

or you can take unclebilly's advice and read the 40 pages and come to the same conclusion.

Brand Penn?? Sorry but I live in florida, and the most used oil is what ever you can get off the wal-mart shelf. Help.

Well, that sucks but not a big deal on the Brad Penn. While it seems to be the best for the aircooled engines, it is NOT the only oil you can use, by any means.

Maybe do a Google search for Brad Penn dealers in Florida or your city. You might be surprized at how available it is.

You do not need Brad Penn. ANY good brand of oil will do perfectly fine.

bklyn,

look for the thread that was mentioned earlier, -it's always near the top two pages on this bbs, -there is a long running discussion on oil these days because of formula changes recently. basically, for your first time however be mindful of the following,

First, drive the car a good 20 min or more to warm everything up

1. drain both tank and sump

2. fill with 9-10Q

3. run and re-check , fill more as needed.

note-check the oil with the engine running! to get proper measurements.

also, while you're at it, do a search on "newbie oil change" this should likely walk you through all the do's and donts!

welcome!!

Mobil One 20W50 will work great. You can get Brad Penn online BTW (LN Engineering sells it for one), and simply have a case shipped to you..

Any good quality NON SL/SM/CJ4 oil will do. Try some the local speed shops or import parts places in your area to see what they carry.

While not the top of the heap, Castrol GTX is acceptable and widely available. You need to be sure to change it every 3,000 miles or less.

Also, be sure to get a good Mahle Filter. Because of how the oiling system works, most of the other brands will not take the operating pressures without catatrophic failure.

The thread we are trying to steer you to is this one: Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils

I live just down the road in West Palm... Jupiter, is heaven compared to here.

Anyway, you can get Brad Penn at Murray's Speed and custom in Stuart, or West Palm beach for $4.09/quart when you buy a 12 quart case.
Call to see if they have it in stock first...
Stuart:
772-781-6767
4348 S.E. Federal HWY, Stuart, FL 34997

West Palm Beach:
561-848-5112
4487 West Roads Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33407

Or, drive west on Indiantown road and go to the Jupiter Walmart.
They have the Mobil One V-twin 20w-50 for about $8.50/quart. It will usually be in the tiny motorcycle section seperate and on another aisle from all the other motor oils.
They rarely have 12 quarts of it in stock so you will have to go more than once to stock up or go down to West Palm and visit the Walmart superstore at Belvedere and Military Trail.
There is probably a Walmart in stuart too.

See, it's easy really. HTH
