WARNING!!The official mice in trunk thread, Help!

That's right, started my 911 today and two mice ran out from the front area, opened the hood and there it was a nest that was built in the matter of two days. Doesn't appear to be any real damage other than my drivers side seat belt was chewed on so I have to track one down. What is the best way to keep them away? Let this be a warning for all of us, cold weather is here and the mice are looking for a nice warm place.

People say to put laundry dryer sheets in the car. The only brand I know is Bounce. There must be others. I'd use a whole box, but what do I know? I've never had a mouse in a car.

Rodents and Porsches are a bad combo. This is what I found behind my M/C last spring. I have been using some traps in the garage which seems to help. I would not use bait.

I store a 911 over the winter in a barn in Upstate New York, and I can tell you fer shur that none of the folk remedies work--Bounce sheets, mothballs, cat****, I've even tried expensive sachets of stuff that's sold to farmers to put in their tractor cabs over the winter. It's all useless if you truly have mice, and I don't mean a suburban critter or two .

The only thing I've found, which is what I use now, is a zippered, impermeable car bag that you drive the car into, throw in eight industrial-strength bags of dessicant and zip it up. Works perfectly.

Now I know that posters will tell me that a loop of deer piss around the car or various other woo-woo measures work fine, but if so, they don't know mice like I know mice. And please, don't tell me cats. I have cats. No cat can eat 6,000 mice, which is what I am guessing my barn holds.

Oil of Peppermint found at any Health Store. Mice hate the smell of mint and it takes the burnt oil smell out of the 911's cabin!

Poor little guys, just trying to find a warm place to sleep and something to chew on.

If you want to keep mice out of your car, then give them a better alternative. Set up a cardboard box with a warm blanket inside, and some mouse food and a bowl of water. Mickey and his friends will hide out there for the winter and leave your car alone.

I had squirrels taking the dog food from the garage and hiding it by my evap in the smugglers box which was ajar. A bit of moisture from the evap and bam you have maggots. What a smell, NASTY. Had to take evap out and bleach the box. The dogs now eat inside, prob solved. Glenn

God you people are funny. Actually, I recommend Luden's cough drops, spaced exactly 15mm apart. And if they don't work, Chef Boyardee spaghetti sauce spread in concentric circles around the car. And if that doesn't work, Chanel Number 5 drives mice away, although it'll be more expensive than your silly car.

Put it in a bag. Or do whatever you wish with your goofy dryer sheets and urban-legend palliatives. The mice don't give a sheiss. Believe me. Or don't.

Oh, and Milt, I have owls. Dozens of them. Plus bears.

I live upstate, near Syracuse. I used to work for a private HVAC company and the owner had a bunch of old cars he used to store in his barn. This is no s#@%, he actually built a two bay stall, completly lining it with 28 gauge 4' x 10' galvanized sheet metal, ceiling, walls and floors. Even had a steel door made. He got sick and tired of mice chewing his mohair upholstery in his model A Fords. He paid his employees to work at his place on the weekends to build this metal mouse-o-leum. Ike was quite a guy...

Be careful with mice on top of the engine under the fan shroud. If they build their nest there, you can burn up a cylinder or two in a heartbeat. If I had mice like that, I would inspect the shroud with a bore scope before turning that key in spring.
