Wine Corks
No, you haven't fallen off the Pelican site.
Like many of you I occasionally have a glass of wine. Some time ago you may have noticed that cork started disappearing in favor of a new ersatz plastic-like substance. (Those of you who don't know what cork is can think of it as an early version of the screw top.) So just today I discovered a need for some small washers to keep a transponder mount about 1/4" from the fender well. Then I opened a bottle of wine and, wallah, I'm looking at a fine 3/4" column of some sort of flexible plastic just dying to be sliced into 1/4" slices and recycled into washers. So, if anyone out there will admit to trying this, will it work? (I know you've thought about it; don't try to deny it.) Will these things offer 2/3 years of life in stressful roles on our cars? Or, sadly, will they just revert to their constituent ingredients and disappear as dust on the road?

I think that is a great use of those. Now I just gotta drink everything I got to find that type of cork!
It probably does not have any UV protection, so it probably wouldn't last in sunlight, however they would probably work great when mounting stuff in the car. I wouldn't put it in the engine bay without some testing either. Maybe I'll cut some slices and tape them near the rear fuel panel and see how long they last with the heat. Too bad its so early on a Thursday... I have to wait until tonight and see if my next bottle has the right cork in it!

If they fit, use them. Hell, I use the bottoms off beer cans as my centre caps.

Corks
Make sure it's from a German bottle of wine, don't fall for those bottles which have a German name on it but are mixed some where in an bathtub. it has to be genuine German.

I've saved the red rubber gaskets from the resealable white ceramic flip tops that were on the old 16oz. Grolsch beer bottles in the past, and found uses for them so why not...

Well I thought I was bringing an issue worthy of serious consideration by fellow Pelicans but if you all want to have fun at my expense go right ahead.
![]() I'm enclosing a picture of my almost complete newly fabricated transponder mount, complete with wine bottle "cork" washers, in a vain attempt to get us back on track. The transponder mount disintegrated and the unit itself survived a 20 lap event under the assault of about 25 Porsches. Hence the new mount. ![]()

Those probably will work well to absorb vibration but I wonder if they will come apart after a bit of use. Certainly worth a try.

I'm with you. I bet they cleverly built something that can't be used for any other purpose, but we will find out!

![]() Tough room, huh? I thought your idea was worthy of further research so I tried a quick Google search to see what plastic was used for these things. I couldn't find out, so I don't know. Seems like it should work. Most plastics aren't known for their propensity to break down so you're probably good. If I were you, I'd give it a try but monitor it regularly, especially in the engine compartment. What was used in the one that disintegrated? Rubber? Elastomer?

I can't believe no one has pointed out the obvious yet. It may help with the vibration but you will have a wine in the same location.....
