86 Carrera before and after in progress

I was casually looking for an 87-89 Carrera in white with no wing when a friend told me about a black 86 Carrera nearby for sale that was super clean. Another friend knew the guy and we went down and I bought it on the second visit. Local mechanic said it was a great by at the price. A/C and cruise dnf but who cares it had polished 9" Fuchs a sunroof, no wing, $8,000 in receipts, and a sunroof.

I drove it for a while, took it to some friends at TPC for a spin and it checked out, maybe 5th gear change a little fidgety but smooth, solid, nice car. The battery / alternator light started coming on at idle and the odo takes a crap. I went to the beach for a couple of weeks and cam back to find it dead. Before it goes out it get's a Momo Prototipo

AFTER (horn button with wheel too small to fit)
Charged the battery and ran it out to Ralph's for an alternator. While it's there change the engine and tranny fluids. Big debate on the fan re-do, stock, polished, painted, red, orange, gulf blue, silver.

AFTER, gloss black housing with silver fan, keep it clean
Also, while it's ther eI'll pull the sppedo and send it to Palo Alto and get it fixed and re-do the face by removing the KPH markings and numbers. Considered going retro green numbers and needle but too fussy, "just clean it up" said Chuck. Priced getting the Martini logo on the face small at the botton but it was $278 to do it so forget it.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229139574.jpg

Ralph calls. "Has your car been shifting OK?" "Yep, sometimes a little funky out of 5th when commuting home but it's probably me getting used to it." "Well something came out in the tranny fluid".............................

Why?

BTW, that's a nice looking car with those wheels. You need a chin spoiler to balance it out.

teamfee3 12-12-2008 06:53 PM

oh no...........

"It is the piece of a roller bearing cage. It should be shifitng poorly or there should be a lot of noise." "Nope, it was fine" "Well the motor and tranny should come out"
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229140094.jpg
OK....while it's out let's do the clutch and anything else recommended while it's apart. A quick call to the very helpful Pelican crew gets me a Sachs Power clutch (some Auto-X and track days expected), Sport/Turbo engine and tranny mounts (going to use it everyday I can) and a list of other $5 bits. It's Ralph again. "The flywheel has deep gouges in it and it can't be resurfaced. Another callto Pelican, something about a magnetic DME sensor so not lightened flywheel available.

Good news, all gears in perfect shape so the big bill was averted. Now what about a cat bypass with an O2 sensor, time to call Pelican.

I like the chin spoiler idea. What a modern retro look so cleaning up the speedo face will help and it's getting re-calibrated and rescreened for 180mph.

teamfee3 12-12-2008 07:00 PM

a little more fun

When I ordered the Momo I saw a set of Weltmeister plastic yellow head light lenses. A good friend had some yellow lenses on his black 04 GT3 and it looked great. I can pull that off, I think. They arrive and it's a nightmare pain in the ass job. Ralph can do it.

A little, well a lot, yellow, but I'll run them until the MD State Police tell me otherwise.

BK911 12-12-2008 07:22 PM

You don't have a rear wing, I wouldn't put a chin spoiler on it.

I know it's a new car and you will be tempted to dump some money into it to customize it, but...

Have you noticed the trend in the long hoods? (Most) Everybody wants originality. In 5 - 10 years (or sooner) the SCs and Carreras will start becoming collectable and people will pay more for originality. If you do change anything keep the original!

BTW I am from Cockeysville. You need to take the car to Loch Raven and blast up and down Loch Raven Drive. Your car will love you for it!! Not exactly the tail of the dragon, but it helps a little.

You'll never get there. :)

There is a large DIY crowd in the DC area. You need to learn to turn a wrench yourself....you'll save a fortune.

Why? That's nonsense. I put a chin spoiler on my Targa, it made a huge improvement. It's not stable enough at 180 however. :D

some fun was had first

I did get in one AutoX with the Cheapeake Region at the Police Training facility in Sykesville. Being used to 2002s and a 914 I spent a lot of time sideways (slow-ways). A ton of fun to get back into it and the club does an awesome job here.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229141325.jpg
My neighbors came in a TR6 and 71 Lotus Elan.

So what's next............
0. Paint spare headlight rings black.
1. It came with a great B&B exhaust so I'll pull the crappy aftermarket radio and create some iPod solution or find an original Monterey Digital Cass / Radio.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229142660.jpg
2. I also want to clean up the rear bumper and pull off the bumper overriders and install Hella tag lights to be legal.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229142570.jpg
3. A Recaro Pole Position for the drivers side is on the list.
4. I like the chin spoiler idea and maybe remove the driving lights and fill the holes.
5. The front bumper / hood rubber looks like crap and the side bellows look funky so the bumper will come off and get repainted.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229141761.jpg
I thought I would go RSR look until I saw this '87 on the forum
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229141647.jpg
This car also has a B&B and Recaro Pole Position with Prototipo. I'll pass on the Carrera graphics but maybe some Martini stripes somewhere.
6. Maybe Rennline black drilled floor boards and silver drilled pedals but no dead pedal because of drilling into the fender well.
7. RS door panels in black vinyl with black or silver pulls
8. Maybe an RS duck tail - can't decide.
9. I really really want the hood mounted Cibie lights but can't decide if it's too cluttered or damn cool.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229142860.jpg
10. Pull off rocker trim and clean up the rockers.
11. Then I saw these cool drilled door handles.

Nice looking car. Black is so sexy!

Flieger 12-12-2008 07:43 PM

Why not go IROC RS? You would save major weight with fiberglass front and rear bumpers. And they look cool.

A little fun for the uninitiated to see and wonder

There is a large DIY crowd in the DC area. You need to learn to turn a wrench yourself....you'll save a fortune.

No garage (breakfast room now) and no time (three kids, Sales Manager at one of the biggest and best BMW Motorcycle Dealers in the US - Bob's BMW)

I think I like the chin spoiler.

Once I get the front bumper off I might go that route. It was my original plan, lighter, cleaner.

Are you sure it goes all the way through? I put one in my Targa and I love it. I wish I had done it long before.

If you're going to do all that other stuff, just POR 15 the holes.

teamfee3 12-12-2008 09:08 PM

dumb stuff decals and badges

I need feedback on the Bursch cat bypass with O2 sensor. Good product? Too loud (attracts cops)? Only $169 at Pelican.

jwash 12-12-2008 10:05 PM

bag on the cat bypass and get SSIs instead. The sound combined with the right exhaust is amazing.

Nickatnyt 12-12-2008 11:42 PM

Drilled door handles scream 'ricer'.

Ducst4 12-13-2008 05:21 AM

How does the B & B exhaust sound compared to others
Do you have any sound clips?

w21055 12-13-2008 05:37 AM

Where did you get that 69-71 World champion Decal?

It's a german car, so I believe the correct term is "Sauerkraut". But it matches the rest of the stuff he wants to do with HIS car, so.... to each their own. Too bad, it was a nice looking car.
