My father builds custom cabinetry, so mine will end up in a very nice box at some point.

If others are interested, and if Tony does not offer something, I will take photos of whatever my father designs and will ask him to work up some quotes and options. This will of course have to be after the tool arrives so he can take measurements and design the box.

By the way, what is the VW385 tool pictured on page one used for?

Someone else can correct me if I am wrong, but VW385 (not all of it is shown in that photo) works much like P258. But instead of the dial indicator being mounted inside the tool (and inside the transmission), the dial indicator mounted on the end of the shaft and is outside of the transmission. I assume this is all done to make it easier to read the indicator (vs. having to look inside through the hole into the transmission).

I have not see an example of VW385 in person, but I think it has a probe that attaches to the middle and some type of internal mechanism within the tool that redirects the in/out probe movement 90 deg then down the shaft to actuate the indicator that is mounted on the end of the shaft. Frankly I have to wonder if the P258 tool might be more accurate?? (less moving parts and potential for slop), but maybe a bit harder to use than VW385.

I will make more these are just ready to go. They came out really nice and actually have consective reading with my factory P258. Let meget some pictures up tomorrow so we can see the finished product.

Tony, I'll take one. Sent you a pm.

Tony,

Did you consider making the G50 spacer for the G50 side cover?

I'll take one as it looks like my next car (racecar) will have a 915. So the G50 spacer is not a must for me. But it'd be great if you could produce a G50 spacer since i'm sure i'll need one for a friend (or me) in the future.

Thanks for putting in the time and effort on this repro job!

Kevin,

I haven't spent to much time trying to figure out what to do with the G-50's I have one in the shop now with the gearbox apart I could take some measurments. I would suspect it would be easier to just get a G-50 diff and machine it to work.

Guy's looks like the three ready to go are sold pending payment. These people have gotten a PM so you know who you are. I'm taking 100.00 deposit on the next three I would like to have that by check and I will not cash it till they are done and the remainder is paid. I have about 5 more diffs to use then I'll need to start finding some I have to have the diffs from a 65-69 sandcast aluminuim transmission so if anybody has any to offer I'm interested.

Thanks,
Tony

The VW 385/1 is used to set pinion shaft depth. The 385 is much simpler to use than the mandrel set-up because installation and removal of the tapered diff bearings is not required. The 385 uses two pucks in place of the bearings, and those pucks simply slide onto the 385's shaft. Also, on the mandrel diff shims must be used under the bearings in some combo that will eliminate axial play. The 385 uses an internal mechanism to pull the pucks tight (eliminate axial play), so minimal set-up work is required prior to setting/adjusting pinion depth.

Ok guys for the three guy's that paid for the tools they will be going out on friday I had a quality control issue with the block when they were milled they "sprung" and were causing inconsistent readings the have be redone in cold rolled steel and will keep there shape. I apologize for the delay.

Thanks,
Tony

No problem.
I appreciate your quality control effort.

lally911 01-13-2010 05:35 PM

No rush Tony. Thanks.

So, did this ever see fruition?

KTL 11-19-2011 11:16 AM

I sent a deposit. Never got a follow-up, despite a few asks, regarding when the next batch of tools would be produced.

911quest 11-20-2011 01:35 PM

Guys I will not be making anymore of these it turned out to b a lot of time and work that I can't dedicate to the project. Kevin I sent you a PM

KTL 11-23-2011 06:29 AM

PM rec'd and responded. Tony pointed out that my deposit (check) was never actually cashed. Mistake on my part in my check register, clearing it when it actually hadn't been cashed. So we're all square.

Sorry to see the tool won't be produced any more. I completely understand things like these take a lot of time, w/out much benefit ($). Nonetheless the effort and willingness to provide a tool that helps the DIY'ers is very gracious.

lally911 06-26-2013 04:39 PM

I've got one of these that was never used. $500 shipped in conus if anyone is interested.
