When looking over the car, again, I found some paint that looked suspect. I ground it down and found this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1350097905.jpg

It wasn't too bad, but I wasn't happy about it. All the other Work I had done would be hidden and not be visible once the car is back together. This however I think I one of the mot critical places on the body of a 911.
Oh well, i gave it a try.
I marked it in different angles to be able to line up the new piece and also detemine the curvature. For this I also used a knife blade. I then simply hand shaped the new piece to the best of my ability:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1350098258.jpg
I tried to replicate even the slightest curve in the panel:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1350098407.jpg
I the cut out the piece. Honestly I wasnt to happy with my precision considering the time I spend on it, but it can be welded up. I just prefer a small and even gap.

That was it for the rust work. The next picture is very close to where I am today. I have begun installing the suspension, so the paint shop will be able to push it around.
I am however not sure about paint shops. I have seen many really bad paint jobs performed by local shops here in LA (Lower Alabama). I have even considered just to prime and sand it then wrap it until further, but I'd like to have it done properly now that I am at it:

very very nice project

This is in the true spirit of Pelican DIY! Great attitude and you are learning so much as you go. These threads really inspire others. Keep at it mate!

Northy 10-13-2012 08:35 AM

Hi Jesper. Great thread and great work too. Keep going it will be worth it!

I notice you said your car was originally Moss Green - that's what colour mine is and I've already got CTR bumpers on mine. I thought I'd post some pics to show you what it looks like in that colour/bumper combination:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7227/7...dab3aaa0_b.jpg

It looks quite dark in the ones above - here is one in better light:

Let me know if you want any more! It's a lovely colour and really looks good in direct sunlight. Like most metallics it can be a sod to match, so getting bodywork sprayed usually means blending between panels.

Thanks for the support guys.

Northy, your car looks stunning.
I got one immediate question. How have you prevented your front bumper from "sagging"? Mine is on the upper horizontal part of it, and I am considering glassing in a long piece of angle ALU.

Wow, beautiful car you got!

Northy 10-13-2012 09:01 AM

I've not done anything to mine, just bolted it on. It's an MA Shaw one and is noticeable better quality than other FG bits I've had before. It's actually quite thick. Some people also run a 964 smile on the CTR front bumper.

jsveb 10-13-2012 10:02 AM

The fit in my bumper is actually good. It is just that sagging, that bothers me.

I actually have a 964 bumper smile I'll be using.

I also have a nice set of Getty carbon doors, those I won't be using, since I am moderating my project in an attempt to get it done sooner than later. I'll sell those once I get some pictures taken of them.

I actually think my car was originally oak green. A Porsche guy told me moss green, but a well educated pp member informed me that moss green was not offered in 1976, oak green was. So that is the color it is going back to.

I have already painted the front booth, using a preval system. Looks good.

Very nice. I missed the reference, are you selling those cf doors?

John

Yes, the doors are on a shelf in the basement. Once I get them out I'll take pictures. I don't think I'll put them up for sale before I can find a suitable box to safely ship them in.
In short, they will be for sale. They are super nice and it hurts, but that's the game.

jsveb 10-13-2012 03:48 PM

Northy, any chance you would email me some high res pictures of your car?

Back home I still got the original 15" Fuchs, color coded in the original oak green.

JohnJL 10-13-2012 04:20 PM

Keep me posted, I'm assembling an order now. Will they fit a 1976 SC?

Sure thing - what's your email address?

rust work done, car back on the ground - and then some

after seeing Northys super nice car, it is time to give an update on my old bucket.

the rust has been removed and it is now resting on its own four wheels.
that was a big event for me
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357444241.jpg

I have also been putting the wiring back in. Well, not quite done yet.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357444369.jpg
pushed back in the garage. i really like seeing it back on the ground, though there is a long way still
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357444530.jpg

i have got a little cliffhanger regarding finishing the car. It involves me having to do some more body work. this time filler, sanding and epoxy priming.

body work done

after the car had been primed. mainly to seal it. i felt like going over the engine and trannny.

when I parked it five years ago, it drove fantastic. When I bought it, the seller told me, it had been rebuilt. however not documented, so we all know wha that can mean...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357445115.jpg

before taking it any further apart, i decided to some degreasing, nasty, but it was actually not too bad considering this car is almost 40 years old. it didnt look that way.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357445270.jpg

i dont care about concourse, i just want it nice. it will be coated with rust protectant before installing - This is a mag case.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357445471.jpg

On the engine, I want to clean it, look it over i.e. check valve adjustment etc and then change out the obvious maintenance items. that was the plan anyways.
The CIS now sits cleaned and ready on the work bench ready to go back on. The WUR looked comlpetely fresh. couldnt see it sat for that long - promising
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357446050.jpg
before that the engine needs a little love:
doesnt look too bad. the intake ports look great.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357445726.jpg

I did however find this. why would you not install bushings? needs fixing
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357445846.jpg

struck by lightning

The engine is now pretty much down to the long-block.

I did find evidence of a rebuild. The heads are unfortunately mismatched. the latest one is from 79, see photo. They also have signs of light porting.
though upside down, you can see cast 79:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357446397.jpg

It is now pretty clean, and I started checking valve adjustment.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357446539.jpg

Yes, it is out of focus, 'cause thats how I felt, struck by lightning.

what you see in the picture below the valve covers, are two broken head studs and one loose head nut. This was from Cyl 5 and 6.
CRAP!!!!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357446708.jpg

That is where I stand now.
I turned to Pelican friends in hope of some help, and naturally it was there right away.
A pelican pointed me towards pelican flat6pac, whom might be able to help me fix this. Engine work is actually my favorite part of this, but I simply do not have time to get all of this done at the same time. Now the other problem is money, as always. Did I say: CRAP!

why would you rebuild an engine like this and not change those dreaded dalivar studs - bummer.

see you next time

Uncle 01-07-2013 03:52 PM

Flat black 930 from the factory is awesome!

Yeah I was the guy from Australia who asked you about shipping them but you had a localish guy lined up to buy them.
