My Carrera 3.0 LWT project

Well, now it is time for me to have a go at my first thread, so excuse me in advance.

I am humbled by all the outstanding DIY on this site.

Anyway as I said I'll now have a go at my own project.

First allow me to give a little description of my goal:

My main priority is to sort out all the rust issues in the body of the car, shouldn't be that bad ;-)

I have bought all kinds of light weight stuff for the car; GRP fenders -bumpers RUF style, -hood and engine lid, carbon doors, 911R tail lights and light weight glass. It has taken me quie a while to gather to parts.

The interior is stripped and will proably include a cage of some sort, more on that later.

My goal, a few years from now, is a weight/HP ratio of 1000 kg (2205 lbs) to 300HP.

I know this project can, if the job is not done right, turn into just another pile of expensive crap.

This is where you guys enter the picture. Because never ever in my life have I experienced this kind of skill and devotion as on this forum.

I will not be doing any modifications that will prevent me from putting the car to it's original state, should I ever want to.

The fokus is on light weight track- street-rod performance, not looks...

This is what the car looked like before I put the wrench in this disassembly mode:

Before i began tearing it apart it drove awesome, only issues being a somewhat sloppy suspension and few oil leaks...

This is how it looked a while back. Notice the 8 and 9's I like'em $$$

I have got a lot of dilemmas regarding this project. Most of them money related, but some also due to the limited avalability of decent technicians, relating to Porsche and chassis restoration. Once I know how to present my problems (tech english) I'll put it here.

The first question I have is how do I get the tacho sensor of, without destroying it or the tranny (it seems to be stuck)???

I will be removing engine and tranny soon.

Merry X-mas

Jesper

Open the cover inside between the seats.
Look for the two wire connector on the passenger side of the car inside the tunnel, and disconnect it
Push the wires out the back of the tunnel , dislodging the cover boot as you go
From under the car, pull the wire lead and boot free so you can remove the engine/trans combo with it
Once the engine/trans is sitting clear on the floor, you can remove the small clip, and gently pry out the sensor. If its stuck, use some penetrant to help free it

have fun !

Thank you very much. I'll do that when I get a chance to work on the car again.

Just got a chance to spend an hour in the garage today (between family gatherings) So I did as TRE Cup said: I marked the two red wires in the car so that I can assemble it again. It unplugged easily and I pulled the wires out.

I then started working on a kart to use for the engine and tranny removal. I will post pictures. Hopefully on dec. 29th.

Happy holidays

thx Rwebb

Just read through the body parts thread. Thanks Rwebb

I honestly think lot of the talk and projects (carbon rear wings etc.) is beyond the scope of my project $$$. However the knowledge and ideas are all very use-full.

Also because I want to be able to go "back to the original state".

When I get the chance I'll post some pictures of the parts I've got . Then you can judge for yourself. I will get noticeably below 1000kg.

The stripped interior and Pole positions, 3/4 fuel weighed in at 985 kg already.

The lower I get in weight the easier my engine (Weight/HP) aim will be to obtain

engine removal

First things first...

Thanks Wayne:

Well as You can see, the engine is out.
I have you guys before me to thank. I build a kart out of two by fours. Put a total of six wheels on it. TO be able to handle the weight and to stay as low as possible.

I finnally had a couple of hours to myself. I dropped the engine myself. I was very nervous about it, but I did it

The engine is a total stock 930/02 (Carrera 3.0). It needs some touching up. To include a new fan. The old one is chipped on the trailing edge - for some reason...

An 11 blade should also inprove cooling.

I will not be doing any work on the engine for now. I will focus on the chassis itself.

The disassembly will continue. I want to strip it totally.

Once I have all bits and pieces apart I will send it out for reconditioning (i.e. gold plating).

If you have any advice on how to proceed in a proper systematic fashion please speak up.

I hope I'll be able to do some more work this week.

This is a ROW Carrera 3.0 (production years 1976/77 only) all of which came from the factory with the 5 blade fan. The 3.0 SC, which is the most commonly seen 3.0 in the US, followed with the 11 blade fan in 1978.

further (small) progress

Yesterday evening I managed to get the rear window removed. I pretty much followed the procedure as listed in Waynes book. THeonly exeption being, that I used a hard peace of plastic to pry out the aluminium molding instead as he suggests.

On the picture below you can see the rear wondow removed (obviously) but also some rust issues, that has been repaired earlier

Question would you leave it as is or would you cut and weld?

the rust is in the fat blue circle:

The Brown cicrle indicates some sort of yarn I found in a cavity on the chasis of some sort. I found it on both the L. and the R-hand side. I pulled it out to be able to photograph it.

What is it for?

I also removed the oil tank. It looks as if it is crome plated or made of stainless steel.
If it is stainless I would consider just cleaning it and maybe some polishing.
Do any of you guys know.

I hope I will get a little more work done tonight

911/964/993 are notorious for rust at the lower edges of the f/r windows

cut and weld is the only way to fix it.

the yarn is probably for sound deadening

the oil tank is ss, just clean it up and reinstall, older models used a Cu plated steel that was somewhat less durable.

Did the car udergo a color change?

On mine I ditched the stock 5 blade fan for an '84-89 Carrera 3.2 fan, it has extra cooling slots for the alternator, not a big deal but it is a nice touch. I kept the stock pully half.

You're gonna have a great car when it's done!

sorry for the late reply

Well for some reason I don't i receive email notification on this thread???

thanks for the answers Bill Verburg

Yes the car was originally "moss grün", which is something like oak- or racing green.

One of my dilemmeas is what color to paint it

My options are:
-moss grün
-Black
-Satin black (like Dutchies 911 and Reapers 935)

I to some extend like the thought of keeping it original, but it seems a little boring. I have only seen a few dark green 911s which i like
Black is right up my alley. I really like it.
Satin black is just that bit more special.

I am seriously considering an 11 blade fan. I also would like a front mounted oil cooler.

chassis stand

I totally forgot to mention where I am in the process.

I am in the process of welding up a chassis stand. I want to be able to turn the car around while working on it. I will offcourse post pictures once I have something decent to present.

Try going to "thread tools" and saying "unsubscribe from thread" then go back in after it re-directs you and go to "thread tools" > "subscribe to thread" > "instant email notification"

chassis kart question

Hi
I am back, at least for a brief moment...

I have a question: I want to make a kart so I'll be able to push the chassis around as necessary. My question is Where do I want this kart to lift on the the under-body, so that I don't do any damage in the process.

I have searched using "chassis and kart" with out any luck. Can any of you help.

Nice project! Keep up the good work - you are an inspiration for me. Like you, I'd like to eventually take the car down to bare metal, and do a nice restoration/upgrade that would still allow me to return the car to stock, should I ever decide that the Carrera 3.0 is worth more that way. I also recommend black . . .

I assume you are looking for something like this:
http://search.eastwoodco.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=chassis+dolly

Not sure where you would find something like that in Denmark, but there must be something you could fabricate or copy perhaps.

search on jacking and jack stands to find a diagram with lift points for the unit body

I'd vote for moss green...

good luck!

jacking

thanks for the replies guys .

jasonmx5 I suggest you find a better source of inspiration this is moving along way to slow.

I used the search keywords as suggested though there was no pics. I did find a lot of useful info. I need to get some slotted rubber blocks so that i can jack it up on the seam just below the sills.

I did fabricate my chassis cart. No camera for the next couple of weeks so hang in there.

Hi

Here's an update:[

I just found this old picture of how it used to look. Pretty good I think

How it looks today:

When I started out on this project I didn't realize how little time I was able to invest in it for the time being (Family: Twins, job, education, house rebuilding. You know the drill).

The thing is in about 8 months from now I'll be moving to the States.

The fact that I don't have the time right now, combined with the fact that I don't have the option of doing this in the US. No work shop; tools, welder etc.

Mean that I may opt for having the car proffesionally restored here in DK
or, I may choose to bring the vehicle to the States. and find a proper shop in the lower south east. Maybe Zuffenhausen (I have read a lot of great stuff about those guys).

This is a car that I'll never sell, neither emotionally or financially would it be feasible. I allready got around $60K into this (Cars are VERY expensive here in DK)
How much can I expect to pay for a first class job in the US?

No welding is expected (I may choose to have that done here).

What would you do???

If I choose to get the job done in the US. I think I'll go ahead and fix all the little bits and pieces: Powder coating, electro plating and so on.

Thanks

Jesper

In Europe, genuine Carrera 3.0l are increasingly sought after and are sold for good money (35k€ for a good example is common, sometimes much more). They are very rare if you look at the numbers that have been produced (less than the 2.7RS for the coupe mind you). So a word of advice would be to keep all original parts and generally not do anything that would prevent turning it back to its original condition.
