Damn in-laws!
I store my car at the in-laws during the winter because they have a huge 3 car garage, well I thought it was huge enough. They have 2 cars in it, one not driven. Then there is the golf cart, yes the golf cart as they live on a course. My car is covered and I see and drive it a few times during the winter. Well I pulled the cover and low and behold my once dent less car now has 4 dents from the center of the drivers door to the rear wheel well. I guess they felt it was ok to tap it once and a while moving the cart. I have not had an estimate because I know it will be expensive as the car is painted Pepsi blue.
Merry x-mas to me.

Try the paintless dent repair first. Your damage sounds like a perfect candidate for that kind of repair. You would not believe how good these guys are.

Opps
The price we pay for free parking goes up all the time.
I was faced with a similar problem only in my own garage. The wife's Mustang has HUGE doors so this is what I came up with to prevent dents, well most of 'em anyways. Cost all of about $4 at Wal-Mart + the string which was in my junk drawer. If it makes you feel any better, my brother used to park his Speedster at our mom's house. She ran into it once parking her Volvo. Upset her so much she didn't drive for days. He said not to worry, it's only a car and had his friend fix it up good as new.

How is it that some people don´t even notice denting other cars and if they do they neglect to tell the owner. Do they calculate it won´t be noticed and if it is, they will look like question marks.

Yep, it's the blue with black wheels car.
These are dents that in no way, shape or form can be taken out with paint less dent repair, these are dents made with the front tire of the cart and will need bondo. If you have ever driven a cart, when you press the pedal they jump forward-this is one of those carts and I see how they did it now. But it kills me that they did it a few times and never told me. I guess it having a cover explains why, plus he likes scotch. So funny that you posted that pic of the yellow foam as I took a bunch of seat cushions they had and jerry rigged them so if they hit it again, it may help some. But I feel that this will be at least a grand or two to fix as the door will have to be re-sprayed as well as the whole rear quarter. Plus the paint will have to be matched as it's a funky color. I wondering if I should try and find a half decent used door as the door on their now was patched up already years ago when I painted it? I’m so out of the loop these days living in Chicago as before I could drive to a few Porsche yards in the bay area and have at it. So true about leaving it in another persons care... What's that Led Zeppelin song? 'No body's fault but mine.'

I don't park my car in others' garages, but if I did, I would:
1. Thank them profusively for letting me use a very valuable commodity in their own house. 2. Do all I can to protect the car from incidental damages: a. park one side close to the wall as much as possible b. roll the windows down, put 2 towels covering the exposed side door panels, or use carboard boxes flatened up against the side of the car c. cover the whole thing up with car cover. If dings happen, I just pay $100 for a paintless guy to come and pull them out. I would still thank them profusively for letting me use a very piece of property they own to keep my car out of the elements even if they think I was nuts.

A 4x8 sheet of plywood leaned against your car will do wonders for keeping things from doing any damage. I used one for years.

2 Set fire to the golf cart.

The foam is a swimming pool noodle, available at most toy/department stores.
You might offer to rearrange the garage for them and strategically place their stored car between yours and the golf cart parking area.

This might be the ticket as they have left over plywood.

I stapled that shipping bubble stuff where it came in contact with the car. Used it for years. Now the 930 is on a lift and the 356 sits under it. It is so much narrower that it never gets dinged.

What's their address? I'm sure someone here would be happy to print out this thread and send it to them (or your wife). The dents will be the least of your problems.

I guess that is what happens when people try to do 3-point turns inside a garage. It really sucks, but... what would the cost be to provide the car safe storage, at a different location? Hopefully the repairs won't be a huge hit. What about ins?? Good luck with it, Tony.

more tuition for the school of life
Guess it depends on the relationship you have with them, but I wouldn't mention it - maybe later after you have the repair done and the protective measures in place.
They'll feel like crap or there could be some resentment, but ymmv. I can offer a +1 on the paintless dent removal guy - I had them pop a dent on my wife's Audi (A4) at her place of work and she approved. best regards,

+1... Take the car to a dentless guy, you won't believe the work they can do. I had quite a few, (that I never thought would come out), removed this past summer. As far as the in-laws... When they ask why you are moving the car tell them you are having the dents removed, nough said. Sorry to hear it.

Yeah Damn In Laws.
We brought a townhouse for the in law because they couldn't get a mortgage. We make payments for the mortgage and one of the condition on me signing on to this additional debt was that I would get the 2 cars garage space that came with the townhouse. My wife decided to store her Audi there, which she doesn't drive, but her sister use it all the time and I store my PORSCHE there. They are a bunch of paranoid immigrants and they have decided that they need to dead bolt lock the garage door. So when ever I need to use my PORSCHE I need to get the wife to call over there to have them unlock the garage door so that I can open it with the remote. No one else in the complex has a dead bolt on their garage door. If I had to do it over again I'll marry an orphan. Last edited by ruf-porsche; 12-21-2008 at 03:44 AM.. |
