Can a healthy SC engine pass emissions testing without the CAT? The guts have come loose within my CAT and it rattles. Been there, done that. I'm tempted to "port" the CAT with my BFS. AS long as I think I'll never need it to actually burn hydrocarbons again.

Using the search engine between my ears (since Wayne has disabled the reliable one), I believe the answer is a resounding yes. The cat. needs to be there for the visual inspection, in some states, but the car (absent any dramatic mods) should pass the sniff test without it.

I believe Jack's memory is just fine. I can also recall several posts in which people stated that they had removed the cat and passed an emissions check. And if you just hollow it out I guess you would also pass a visual if it's required.

I passed the emissions test in Washington state no problemo with CO2 set at 3.5% and a bypass pipe with standard muffler.

Also depending on where you go for inspections the inspection morons probably will not know the difference between a cat equiped and non-equiped 911.
Just say it is built into the large sausage muffler ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

On my inspection (at the time I had not yet ditched the cat for my SSI's) I had some 17 year old kid who was probably hungover and clearly sleeply on the Saturday AM I took my car for the test. He attempted to look under the rear of the car to locate the cat and O2 sensor. He was obviously looking in the wrong area (right rear) and was apparently just going thru the motions b/c he quit looking and punched into his computer that the cat and sensor were present.
SO....go on Sat. am to some mom and pop testing site and give it a wurl. At least in CO...the worst they can do is tell you to go get a Cat installed and come back for the test. I don't believe they catalog your car in the computer as not having a cat..so going to another station solves your problem. My car passed with the O2 disconnected. There is no reason it would not pass without the cat (if yours is original...it probably does very little anyhow), if you lean it out enough. Good Luck.
