Have few questions about shifter
I have a lot of space between gears when shifting, I go from the dash board to the seat. Is there any way of improving the distance between gears? What is the difference between a short shifter and speed shifter?

Search for wevo shifter and hargett and you'll get more than you bargain for.

The shortshift will improve it a bit.
I have bought the Rennshift because I found the Porsche shortshift kit too sloppy. I didn't even knew I had one until I removed it ![]() Rennshift is very good and easy to install! |

The WEVO and Rennshift kits should shorten the throws 33% or so.. I think the Rennshift has the ability to switch between 33% and like 22% shorter throws. Both of these kits also add a centering spring to the shifter so it will sit in the 3-4 plane while in neutral.
I have the WEVO and love it, even though it is harder to install than the Rennshift. I also know people w/ the Rennshift and love it.. I don't know much about the Hargett, but you probably can't go wrong with any of them.

Be careful with short shifters of any brand that shorten the throws too much. There's no free lunch. The shifting effort increases proportionally as the shift throw decreases. In addition, the quicker shift (up or down) can rush the finicky synchros, causing premature wear.

i have a short shift kit to sell. $45.00 shipped.
you should check all your shift bushings they are most likley worn out. out host sell a nice kit for this. if you replace all the shift bushings and install the shift kit it makes a very tight shifter. ![]()

that looks like a weltmeister kit. I feel the factory kit is better. It includes all new mving parts. I had a weltmeister and it was OK, but not compatible with the Wevo shiftgate I put in my transmission.
I would start with replacing all the plastiv bushings. Including the shift rod connector.

Does anyone think you actually shift faster with a short shift kit?
The advantage I see with my Wevo is less travel between shifts. My stock shifter shifted just as fast (time between gears).

I had the Weltmeister kit in my 914 and the shift lever was too short but the throw was good. For everyday use those kits are definately different, tighter, shorter, so make sure you really want that. The factory kit in my '86 Carrera is shorter throw but sloppy is a good description.

Before spending all sorts of money on a short shift kit, please invest a few bucks and replace the cup bushing at the end of your shifter. Then replace the coupler bushings and adjust the coupler per the many postings on this site. I think you will be quite supprised at the results. The 915 takes a while to get used to and even longer if something is out of wack.

I installed the factory short shift. At first I wasn't happy with it and was immediately looking into the Wevo and Rennshifts to replace it asap. The short shift was actually worse than my original shifter.
But then I realized I didn't have it adjusted properly and the ball cup that holds the shift lever was very loose. I tightened that up. Adjusted the shift coupler. And now I love the factory short shift. It feels like it must have felt when the car was new. I still would like to have the Rennshift or Wevo...but I don't feel like I "need" it now. My point I guess is that sometimes it just takes some tightening or adjusting to get something to feel right.

I agree, before I installed my WEVO shifter and shift coupler I readjusted the coupler and it really helped. Of course, then I installed the WEVO shift coupler and I was surprised how much slop just the WEVO shift coupler removed from the stock shifter. Finally, about 2 months later I installed the WEVO shifter and it really made the car shift the way I thought it should.
