Dreaming...Carrera GT vs 917
You have only one wish from the Genie. He will grant you either a Carrera GT or a 917. Which would you pick?
With both cars the Genie grants you as much track time, gas, and maintenance as you want. His only stipulation is that you cannot sell the car of your choice. Additionally the 917 would remain illegal for street use. What would it be?

Wish I had the $$ to even entertain the fantasy ;-)
Edit... Well...as long as we're just dreaming then....917 all the way. Guess I thought you were gonna do one or the other with cash money.

C-GT
Despite some recent crashes it is a LOT safer for the average numbnuts to drive. So the TUD* would be a lot longer for me in that. Also, I can drive it on the street. And, it might even be faster around a track than a 917... * Time Until Death

The 917 at one time had 1100hp and weighed 1900lbs. The Cgt may out handle it in some parts, but not in a straight line.

I dunno, I think I would go with the 917 if we had unlimited track time. I don't think the CGT is too practical on the street...

Unless the Genie is going to trim me down from "lineman" to "safety" I have no hopes of fitting in either with my fat arse!
But for this discussion I would have the Genie strip the CGT of all creature comforts, install some nice track safety devices and still keep it street legal. Also any track at any time I choose! (Im guessing that he will keep the money coming in so I wont have to work, right?)

I would have said a 917 before this wekend. However, our Nasa event at Autobahn Country Club in IL had a bunch of cool members running on the north track including a Carrera GT. Actualy, the first one I've ever seen run on track and it was a sight to see and hear. There were also quite a few other nice cars including a 911RSR replica, GT3 cup car, 997, Ferrari Challenge car, Spec racer, Dodge truck, Lambo Gallardo. Oh how I need to hit the Powerball.

917. I'm 6'1" though. It would have to be a special cockpit version.

Grady, we know you've done some warm up laps in the 917, but have had any seat time in the CGT to compare?
Myself, I have to pick the 917 too. |

nice fantasy ..... def 917, I will prob never have the money for one ..... CGT on the other hand maybe with 10 years of hard work and if depreciation works in our favour, we might be able to pick one up, at a decent price .....

Got to ride 4 laps in a CGT at Mid-Ohio in April - would sure love to have the same chance in a 917. Mike Valentine brought his to the OVR Clubrace/DE at Putnam Park last week and stuck around to be the pace car on Saturday and Sunday - pretty cool site!

Since you asked, the 917 along with the 908 and 906, has to be one of the most superb cars of all times. The Carrera GT is a great car, but I rather vintage race the 917, and since it includes all maintaince and costs, The 917 hands down.

This comes down to what Porsche is to you.
If Porsche to you is the greatest production racing car company in the history of the automobile, then the 917 would be on the short list with the 935, 956, or 959. If you like Porsche the maker of a nice boulevard racer and sports utes, then take the CGT. Put me on the list of the aircooled 917!!!!

917 ... wouldn't even matter which version, including the 'Pink Pig' 917/20 SERA special body!
Speaking of 917s ... there is a new documentary film out this year about Jo Siffert; http://www.swissinfo.org/eng/In_depth/detail/Film_honours_coolest_Swiss_ever.html?siteSect=107&sid=6380328&cKey=1137233141000
